Houthis Claim Drone Strikes on Saudi Airport, Aramco Facility in Najran

· · 2 min read

Yemen's Houthi rebels announced Thursday they conducted drone attacks on Najran Airport and an Aramco facility in Saudi Arabia's southern Najran region. These strikes come amidst escalating tensions and renewed conflict in West Asia.

Yemen's Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility on Thursday for a series of drone attacks targeting a Saudi airport and a state-owned Aramco oil facility. The alleged strikes occurred in Saudi Arabia's southern Najran region, located near the Yemeni border, amidst a significant escalation of hostilities in the ongoing West Asia conflict.

Houthi military spokesman Yahya Saree issued a statement via Telegram, asserting that the group "successfully carried out two military operations using drones." The first operation, he stated, targeted a "sensitive Saudi enemy site at Najran Airport," while the second focused on the "Aramco facility in Najran."

Escalating Regional Tensions

These claimed Houthi drone attacks follow a period of heightened tensions across the region, particularly after the Houthis ended a 2022 truce with Yemen’s Saudi-backed government in July. The breakdown of the ceasefire has drawn Yemen further into the broader Middle East conflict, which has seen renewed aggression and tit-for-tat exchanges.

Earlier on Thursday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards issued a warning that Saudi Arabia would be "unable to contain" the Houthi rebels as their attacks on the kingdom intensified. This rhetoric underscores the complex regional dynamics and the proxy nature of some of the conflicts.

Broader Houthi Strategy and Maritime Threats

The recent Houthi drone attacks are part of a wider strategy that includes threats to vital shipping lanes. A Yemeni minister recently informed AFP that the Houthi rebels are allegedly plotting to seize land along the critical Bab al-Mandab Strait. Such a move would significantly enhance their ability to threaten this crucial global shipping artery, which connects the Red Sea to the Gulf of Aden.

Following the resumption of hostilities last month, which coincided with the Houthis welcoming an Iranian plane in Yemen's capital Sanaa, the rebels announced a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia. Since then, they have reportedly targeted Saudi ships, airports, and oil infrastructure, indicating a widening scope of their military operations. The latest drone claims in Najran are a continuation of these expanding hostilities and underscore persistent warnings about the Houthis' strategic objectives.
