Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan has been transferred back to Adiala Jail after undergoing a comprehensive medical examination at Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad. A team of six specialist doctors assessed the 73-year-old leader and determined that his health condition allowed him to safely remain in prison, concluding his brief hospital stay.
Supreme Court Mandated Medical Evaluation
Khan’s transfer from Adiala Jail to the private hospital occurred around midnight on Friday under stringent security measures. The move was in compliance with a Supreme Court order, which directed authorities to facilitate a medical panel, including Khan's personal physician, to examine him. The court had initially stated that Khan should remain at the hospital until the next hearing, scheduled for September 16.
Ongoing Health Concerns and Legal Disputes
The former prime minister's medical treatment has been a significant point of contention in his prolonged legal and political struggles. His legal representatives and family have consistently argued that his health has deteriorated during his incarceration, specifically citing concerns about his eyesight after a diagnosis of right central retinal vein occlusion. While Khan has been taken to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences several times for treatment, the government has maintained that existing medical reports did not necessitate immediate hospitalization.
The latest assessment by the specialist doctors appears to have corroborated the government's stance, leading to Khan's return to prison rather than admission for further treatment.
Enhanced Security During Transfer
Authorities implemented extensive security protocols for Khan's transfer to and from Shifa International Hospital. Islamabad Inspector General of Police Syed Ali Nasir Rizvi, accompanied by senior police officers, personally reviewed the security arrangements prior to Khan's arrival. A substantial police contingent was deployed around the hospital facility throughout the examination period.
Government Review Plea and PTI's Reaction
The government had attempted to challenge the Supreme Court's directive regarding Khan's hospital transfer. However, the Supreme Court Registrar's Office reportedly returned the government's review petition due to procedural objections. The government is expected to re-submit the petition, indicating that the broader legal dispute remains active despite Khan's return to jail.
Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), had welcomed the Supreme Court's intervention, describing it as a "new ray of hope." The PTI continues to advocate for improved access to Khan, expedited resolution of his numerous cases, and his eventual release from custody. The party also maintains plans for a nationwide march on September 27.
Background of Imran Khan's Imprisonment
Imran Khan served as Pakistan's prime minister from 2018 until his removal in April 2022 following a parliamentary no-confidence vote. His ouster initiated a period of intense confrontation between his PTI movement and Pakistan's military establishment. He was first arrested in May 2023, triggering widespread protests, and was subsequently re-arrested in August 2023 after being convicted in the Toshakhana case, which involved allegations of illegal sale of state gifts. Khan has remained in custody since then, consistently asserting that the multiple cases and convictions against him are politically motivated, an accusation denied by the Pakistani government.
