Milk Surpasses Rice and Pork as World's Most Valuable Food Commodity in 2024

· · 2 min read

Milk was the world's most valuable food commodity in 2024, reaching $379 billion in production value. This surpassed rice at $362 billion and pork at $355 billion, according to a Visual Capitalist analysis of UN FAO data.

In a surprising shift in global food markets, milk has emerged as the world's most valuable food commodity, with a production value of $379 billion in 2024. This figure places dairy ahead of traditional staples like rice and widely consumed meats such as pork.

The findings, based on an analysis by Visual Capitalist using data from the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), highlight the immense scale of the global agriculture industry, which saw the top ten food commodities collectively generate an estimated $2.5 trillion last year.

Milk's Dominance in Global Value

Milk's top position is attributed to a global output of 985 million metric tonnes in 2024, with cattle contributing a significant 81% of total production. The analysis also noted the separate ranking of buffalo milk, underscoring its importance, particularly in Asian markets.

Following closely behind milk, rice secured the second spot with a production value of $362 billion. Pork rounded out the top three, valued at $355 billion. The narrow financial margin separating these top commodities illustrates the intense global demand for both staple grains and animal-based products.

The Multi-Trillion Dollar Food Economy

The comprehensive ranking of the world's most valuable food commodities in 2024 reveals a diverse yet concentrated market:

  • Milk: $379 billion
  • Rice: $362 billion
  • Pork: $355 billion
  • Beef: $306 billion
  • Corn: $270 billion
  • Chicken: $264 billion
  • Wheat: $209 billion
  • Eggs: $157 billion
  • Soya beans: $142 billion
  • Tomatoes: $136 billion

Animal products notably occupy five of the top eight positions, demonstrating their significant economic footprint. Pork, beef, and chicken alone accounted for approximately $925 billion in combined production value, with eggs adding another $157 billion. The total value of meat products, including lamb and goat, reached roughly $1.02 trillion, as global meat production climbed to 374 million metric tonnes in 2024.

Tomatoes Lead Produce Sector

Among fruits and vegetables, tomatoes were the sole representative to break into the top ten, valued at $136 billion. This placed them above other major produce items like potatoes, apples, and grapes. The inclusion of tomatoes underscores the vast array of products driving the multi-trillion-dollar global agricultural economy, from essential grains and livestock to dairy and widely consumed fresh produce.
