Chennai Sinkhole Swallows Car Near Tidel Park; Two Safe After 10-Foot Drop

· · 3 min read

A road near Chennai's Tidel Park caved in Thursday morning, creating a 10-foot sinkhole that swallowed a car with two occupants. Both individuals were reported safe following the dramatic collapse in an area undergoing metro rail construction.

Road Collapse Near Tidel Park Sends Car into Sinkhole

A section of road near Chennai's bustling Tidel Park unexpectedly collapsed on Thursday morning, October 8, 2026, creating a significant 10-foot-deep sinkhole. A car carrying two people plunged into the sudden crater. Fortunately, both occupants were reported safe, escaping serious injury from the harrowing incident.

Visuals from the scene depicted the vehicle overturned within the sinkhole, surrounded by a large expanse of crumbled asphalt and earth. The road surface reportedly gave way without warning, leaving the driver little time to react before the car lost balance and fell into the chasm.

The incident occurred on a stretch of road where metro rail construction is actively underway, raising immediate concerns about infrastructure integrity in the area. The collapse led to considerable traffic congestion and prompted metro workers to begin repair and restoration efforts at the site, with traffic movement remaining impacted.

Broader Concerns Over India's Road Safety

This dramatic sinkhole incident in Chennai highlights persistent issues with road conditions across India. Just over a year prior, in May 2025, a similar road collapse occurred near Thiruvanmiyur Junction on OMR, where an aging sewage pipeline failure led to a six-foot-deep crater, injuring five people after their car fell in.

The dangers extend beyond sudden collapses. Government data presented in Parliament revealed a concerning rise in fatalities from pothole-related road accidents, with 2,385 deaths recorded in 2024—a 53% increase from 1,555 deaths in 2020. Between 2020 and 2024, potholes claimed a staggering 9,438 lives nationwide. Uttar Pradesh reported the highest number of such deaths in 2024 with 1,369 fatalities, while Tamil Nadu saw 612 pothole-related deaths during the 2020-2024 period.

Other tragic incidents underscore the widespread problem: in March 2025, a motorcyclist died in Delhi after slipping on a large pothole; in July 2025, a scooter rider in Mumbai died after losing balance on a pothole and being run over; and in September 2025, a couple in Ahmedabad died from electrocution after their two-wheeler stumbled on a pothole in a waterlogged road with exposed wiring.

Government Efforts and Ongoing Challenges

Road safety remains a critical challenge in India. Overall, the country recorded 1.77 lakh road deaths in 2024, a 2.31% increase from the previous year. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways attributes accidents to multiple factors, including speeding, mobile phone use, drunken driving, and crucially, vehicle and road conditions.

For Chennai, the immediate focus is on ensuring the safety of motorists navigating stretches with ongoing metro construction. Repair work at the Tidel Park site is continuing, aiming to restore normal traffic flow and address the underlying causes of the collapse.
