Owners of Apple's latest iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max devices are encountering an unexpected issue: significant color fading on their new smartphones. Reports, primarily shared across social media platforms like Reddit and X, indicate that certain models, specifically the Burgundy Red and Black finishes, are developing noticeable discoloration.
Discoloration Details Emerge
Users have posted photographs online showcasing the affected devices, where parts of the phone's chassis appear lighter or faded compared to their original hue. The discoloration often manifests initially around the rear camera module, sometimes taking on a pinkish tint on Burgundy Red models, before potentially extending across the aluminium frame of the device.
This issue is emerging relatively soon after the iPhone 18 Pro series hit the market, raising concerns among early adopters.
Unconfirmed Causes and Apple's Silence
The precise cause behind the color fading remains unconfirmed. Users have speculated various possibilities, including exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light, particularly for phones frequently used outdoors. Some suggest that keeping the device in a protective case or regular cleaning might mitigate the problem, though no definitive solution or cause has been established.
As of now, Apple has not issued an official statement or acknowledged the widespread reports regarding this discoloration issue. This lack of official response leaves many users seeking clarity and potential remedies for their high-end devices.
Echoes of Past Issues
The current situation with the iPhone 18 Pro models is not unprecedented for Apple. Last year, similar complaints surfaced regarding the iPhone 17 Pro, with users reporting fading on the Cosmic Orange variant. Additionally, some Deep Blue units of the iPhone 17 Pro also reportedly experienced comparable discoloration problems, suggesting a recurring challenge with certain color finishes on Apple's premium smartphone lines.
