Reliance Jio is making significant strides in developing its own indigenous satellite broadband technology, according to Chairman Akash Ambani. Speaking on the sidelines of the India Mobile Congress 2026, Ambani confirmed the company's rapid progress on an end-to-end technology stack designed to deliver high-speed internet to every Indian household.
Ambani emphasized Jio's commitment to its domestic consumers, stating, "We want to be heads down and deliver value to our Indian consumers." He highlighted home broadband as a primary application for this technology, asserting that Jio already has solutions in place to achieve widespread connectivity, not "in the future, that is today."
Focus on Indigenous Development
The Jio chairman revealed that the company is actively building an entirely indigenous stack for its satellite communication ambitions. While a specific timeline for the launch of Jio's first fleet of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites was not provided, Ambani expressed confidence in their development. "We're making good progress. I think we're building an end-to-end indigenous stack," he affirmed, adding that the technology must be "on par with or leading the world."
This push for indigenous Jio satellite broadband comes amid ongoing discussions and a regulatory row involving Elon Musk's Starlink. Starlink, which aims to launch its services in India, has faced delays awaiting government approval. Musk recently posted on social media, suggesting that "certain oligarchs" were blocking Starlink to maintain monopolistic control, though he did not name specific entities.
Regulatory Landscape
The Ministry of Communications has clarified that all licensed satellite operators, including Jio Satellite Communications, Starlink, and Eutelsat OneWeb, are currently undergoing security assessments and are at the same regulatory stage. This statement indicates that rules apply equally to all players in the emerging Indian satellite communication market.
Ambani reiterated Jio's core promise: "every Indian home will have a broadband connection that they can connect to." This vision underscores Jio's strategic focus on expanding broadband access across the nation through its homegrown satellite solutions.
