Noida International Airport (NIA) has announced a strategic partnership with Chennai-based ePlane Company, Ubifly Technologies Private Limited, to develop advanced air mobility (AAM) infrastructure. This collaboration aims to introduce air taxi services by 2028, significantly reducing travel times between key urban centers like Noida and Gurgaon.
Revolutionizing Urban Travel
The agreement outlines a comprehensive framework for jointly developing the necessary regulatory standard operating procedures (SOPs), Vertiport Management Systems, and the operational ecosystem required for ePlane’s flagship e200X aircraft. This initiative is set to transform urban transit, offering airport-to-airport connectivity, intra-city commutes, and crucial emergency air ambulance services across the region.
Infrastructure and Trials
As part of the partnership, Noida International Airport will allocate dedicated space within its premises for proof-of-concept trials, the establishment of vertiports, and air-taxi charging stations. The airport will also align its existing standard operating procedures to accommodate the unique requirements of electric Vertical Take-off and Landing (eVTOL) services.
Daniel Bircher, Chairman of Noida International Airport, emphasized the airport's long-term vision:
"Noida International Airport’s long-term vision is closely linked with bringing innovative, future-ready infrastructure to the region. Integrating Advanced Air Mobility into our airport framework is an important part of our commitment to seamless, multi-modal connectivity."
ePlane Company's Role and Aircraft Capabilities
The ePlane Company is actively developing its flying taxi, the e200X, with a target launch in 2028. The aircraft is designed to cover 100 kilometers on a single charge, with projected fares estimated at approximately 2.5 times the cost of a standard Uber ride. The company recently unveiled its full-scale e200X PT-01 prototype and is currently conducting ground testing.
Dr. Satyanarayanan Chakravarthy, Founder and Director of Ubifly Technologies, highlighted the systematic approach:
"This MoU with Noida International Airport allows us to systematically validate our operational models using drone trials before transitioning to piloted e200X flights. It is a pragmatic, step-by-step approach to ensuring that when our aircraft are certified, the airport ecosystem is fully equipped to deliver on our core promise: bypassing urban gridlock and compressing hours of road travel into minutes of safe, emission-free transit for both passengers and critical medical care."
Regulatory and Operational Integration
Both entities will collaborate closely with key regulatory bodies, including the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), to secure necessary clearances and ensure safety standards. Joint efforts will also involve Air Traffic Control (ATC) and state governments to establish robust safety frameworks and integrated Vertiport Management Systems, potentially incorporating AI-assisted fleet scheduling with smart-city systems.
