A Dragon's Namesake in Thailand's Forests
A newly discovered lizard species in Thailand has been christened *Acanthosaura syrax*, a name that resonates with fans of HBO's fantasy series *House of the Dragon*. This tiny, yellowish-green creature, a type of mountain horned dragon, takes its name from Syrax, the loyal dragon ridden by Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen.
The discovery was made in the high-elevation evergreen mountain forests of Mae Wong National Park in western Thailand, at altitudes exceeding 1,300 meters. A research team led by Poramad Trivalairat, with scientists from Chulabhorn Royal Academy and Kasetsart University, described the species. Their findings were published in the open-access journal ZooKeys on July 31.
Distinctive Features of the Syrax Mountain Horned Dragon
Researchers identified several unique characteristics that distinguish *A. syrax* from the 22 other known species within the *Acanthosaura* genus. These traits include:
- A striking yellowish-green body coloration.
- Its status as one of the smallest members of its genus.
- An unusual capacity to produce large egg clutches relative to its body size.
- The smallest neck and back crest scales recorded across the entire genus.
- The absence of the typical black patch around the eye found in many related species, replaced by a distinctive dark collar marking.
Further genetic analysis, examining two specific genes, provided conclusive evidence that *A. syrax* is a distinct species, genetically divergent from its closest known relative, *A. lepidogaster*, and other species in the genus. Scientists have proposed the common English name "Syrax mountain horned dragon" for the new species.
High-Altitude Habitat and Conservation Imperatives
The habitat of *A. syrax* appears to be confined to a narrow band of high-elevation forest, with its populations naturally fragmented by the rugged mountain terrain. This restricted distribution highlights the vulnerability of Thailand's unique mountain ecosystems.
The discovery has prompted calls for stronger protection of Mae Wong National Park's forests, which also provide sanctuary for several other threatened species, including the Asian forest tortoise, Oldham's leaf turtle, and the Indochinese tiger. Researchers hope that the newly discovered *A. syrax* will draw greater attention to the rich biodiversity and urgent conservation needs of the region.
The Inspiration: Syrax of Westeros
For viewers of *House of the Dragon*, Syrax is known as Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen's iconic yellow dragon, a prominent figure in the series' narrative. While not the largest or most formidable dragon, Syrax is closely associated with Rhaenyra and is notable for her reproductive output, laying multiple clutches of eggs.
The scientists' choice of name was deliberate, drawing parallels between the fictional dragon and the real-world lizard. They cited the new species' distinctive yellowish hue, its relatively small size compared to related species, and its significant reproductive output, reflected in its high clutch size, as key inspirations.
*House of the Dragon*, a prequel to *Game of Thrones*, is set two centuries before the original series and chronicles the brutal Targaryen dynasty's succession struggle centered on Rhaenyra Targaryen. Dragons are central to the story, with Syrax among the prominent creatures featured alongside Daemon Targaryen's Caraxes and Aemond Targaryen's enormous Vhagar.
Thus, while *Acanthosaura syrax* may not breathe fire or vie for the Iron Throne, its unique characteristics offered scientists a compelling, real-world reason to bestow upon it a name straight out of Westeros.
