Smit Machchhar, an Indian national and seasoned pilot with extensive experience, has been identified as the captain at the heart of a reported mid-air emergency aboard flydubai flight FZ1073 on Wednesday. The incident led to the Boeing 737 MAX 8 making an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia, following an alleged confrontation in the cockpit.
Machchhar, who joined flydubai in 2022 as a direct-entry captain, had previously spent approximately 11 years with SpiceJet in Mumbai. His roles at the Indian carrier included senior commander and, from November 2020, a line training captain, where he was responsible for training and evaluating other pilots. His LinkedIn profile indicates a significant flight history, with around 9,750 hours on Boeing 737-800 and 737 MAX 8 and 9 aircraft, including over 6,400 hours as pilot-in-command at SpiceJet.
The Incident Unfolds on Flight FZ1073
Flydubai flight FZ1073 was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv with approximately 174 passengers when the incident occurred more than two hours into the journey. Flight-tracking data revealed a sharp descent from about 34,000 feet, followed by the transmission of emergency signals. The aircraft initially transmitted squawk 7700, indicating a general emergency, which was then followed by squawk 7500, associated with unlawful interference.
Reports suggest that Captain Machchhar was attacked by the co-pilot, identified in some accounts as an Omani national. Machchhar was reportedly injured during the struggle but managed to regain control of the aircraft. Passenger and crew accounts described shouting and a physical altercation within the cockpit, with some individuals reportedly intervening to help.

Following the emergency landing in Tabuk, both Captain Machchhar and the co-pilot were transported to a hospital. Flydubai confirmed that the aircraft was ultimately secured by on-duty crew members traveling as passengers, and all passengers and crew were safe. The airline has officially described the event only as an “incident while en route” and has not publicly confirmed the specific details of the confrontation or the nationalities of the pilots involved.
