Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has revealed dramatic details surrounding a recent incident aboard a Flydubai flight, where one pilot reportedly stabbed his co-pilot and attempted to crash the aircraft with passengers on board.
The harrowing events unfolded on flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Tel Aviv. According to Netanyahu, who spoke with an Israeli passenger from the flight, the plane experienced a rapid descent, plunging 17,400 feet in less than two minutes.
Pilot's Violent Act on Flydubai Flight
Netanyahu stated that one of the pilots initiated a "violent incident" by stabbing his colleague. Following the assault, the attacking pilot then allegedly attempted to sabotage the aircraft's systems, seemingly with the intent to crash the plane.
The flight data confirmed the severe and sudden drop in altitude, indicating a critical situation unfolding in the cockpit. The incident forced the immediate diversion of the flight to Tabuk in northern Saudi Arabia.
Passengers and Crew Heroes Intervene
The situation was brought under control thanks to the extraordinary bravery of both passengers and crew members. Netanyahu recounted that a passenger, along with another crew member, managed to force their way into the cockpit.
Inside, they confronted and successfully overpowered the pilot who had carried out the stabbing. Crucially, another air crew member, who was also on board, then entered the cockpit and managed to stabilize the aircraft, preventing a potential catastrophe.
Aftermath and Arrest
Following the intervention, the plane was able to land safely at Tabuk Airport. Netanyahu praised the individuals who acted decisively, stating, "I salute these heroes who demonstrated extraordinary resourcefulness and courage. They saved many lives and prevented a major disaster."
The pilot responsible for the attack was subsequently arrested by Saudi authorities upon landing and is currently undergoing questioning. Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Danny Danon, also commended the "heroic Emirati pilot" who fought back, wishing him a speedy recovery, and acknowledged the "extraordinary determination and resourcefulness" of the Israeli passengers.
All passengers from flight FZ1073 were reported to be out of danger after the incident.
