Samsung Reclaims Top Spot in India's Smartphone Market; Budget Phone Shipments Halve

· · 2 min read

Samsung secured 17% of India's smartphone market in Q3 2026, regaining the lead. Overall shipments declined 20% year-on-year, with the sub-₹20,000 segment experiencing a sharp 47% slump due to rising component costs.

Samsung has successfully reclaimed its position as the leading smartphone brand in India, securing a 17% market share during the third quarter of 2026. This achievement comes amidst a challenging period for the overall Indian smartphone market, which saw shipments decline to their lowest levels in a decade.

According to Counterpoint Research, total smartphone shipments in India fell by a significant 20% year-on-year in Q3 2026. The impact was particularly severe in the budget segment, with shipments of smartphones priced below ₹20,000 plummeting by an alarming 47% compared to the previous year.

Samsung's Return to Dominance

Samsung's resurgence to the top spot, after nine quarters, is largely attributed to the strong performance of its Galaxy A series. The company's effective online and offline retail strategies, combined with relatively controlled price increases despite rising memory costs, helped it outperform competitors.

While Samsung registered year-on-year shipment growth, other major players faced contractions. Vivo (excluding iQOO) held a 16% market share, followed by OPPO at 12%. Both Xiaomi and Apple each secured 8% of the market, with POCO rounding out the top brands at 4%.

Challenges for Affordable Smartphones

The sharp decline in the sub-₹20,000 segment is primarily driven by escalating manufacturing costs, particularly due to higher memory prices. This has compelled manufacturers to either raise device prices or adjust product portfolios, pushing some models into higher price brackets.

Consumers are responding by becoming more discerning and delaying their smartphone upgrades. In an effort to keep devices accessible, some manufacturers are reportedly shifting focus towards more 4G and lower-specification models, which could limit options for budget-conscious buyers.

Market Outlook and Future Price Hikes

Counterpoint Research anticipates further price increases in the Indian smartphone market following the festive season sales. The research firm projects that India’s overall smartphone market will contract by approximately 13% in 2026. These rising costs are expected to extend smartphone replacement cycles well into 2027.

For consumers, this trend means that attractive options at lower price points may become scarcer. Leveraging exchange offers, no-cost EMI schemes, and retailer discounts will likely become crucial strategies for those planning to upgrade their smartphones in the near future.
