Fitbit Air Update: Google Health Guardian Adds 100+ Activity Detection, Blood Pressure & Insulin Trends

· · 2 min read

Google has rolled out a major update for the Fitbit Air via the Google Health app, introducing the Health Guardian feature and expanded automatic workout detection. Users can now track over 100 activities and monitor blood pressure and insulin resistance trends.

Google has launched a significant software update for its screenless fitness tracker, the Fitbit Air, enhancing its capabilities through the Google Health app. The update, which began rolling out to users on October 22, introduces the 'Health Guardian' feature and dramatically expands automatic activity detection.

Introducing Health Guardian for Deeper Insights

The new Health Guardian feature, available to Google Health Premium subscribers, provides users with a more comprehensive understanding of their health over time. It is designed to track subtle changes, offering monthly in-depth reports within the Google Health app.

Monitoring Key Health Trends

  • Blood Pressure Trends: Users will gain insights into their blood pressure patterns, helping them identify shifts and make informed lifestyle adjustments.
  • Insulin Resistance Trends: The feature also monitors insulin resistance trends, providing personalized wellness guidance based on detected patterns.

These reports aim to empower users to adapt their fitness plans and receive tailored advice for their well-being.

Expanded Automatic Activity Tracking

Alongside Health Guardian, the update brings a much smarter workout detection system to the Fitbit Air and compatible devices like the Pixel Watch 3, 4, and 5. This enhancement significantly broadens the range of activities the tracker can automatically identify and record.

Over 100 Activities Now Detected

The system can now automatically track more than 100 different activities, a substantial increase from the previous limit of 10. This includes diverse exercises such as strength training, swimming, and various racket and team sports. Google states that the new model is nearly twice as accurate as its predecessor and reduces missed workout detections by over 50% based on internal testing.

The Fitbit Air will automatically detect and record workouts lasting at least 15 minutes that maintain an elevated heart rate. Details of these activities are typically sent to the Google Health app within 30 minutes. Users can confirm or correct detected activities, allowing the feature to learn individual exercise patterns and improve future accuracy.
