Former Twitter CEO Parag Agrawal has revealed that Microsoft chief Satya Nadella served as his primary leadership role model for his planned transformation of the social media company. Agrawal, who took over from co-founder Jack Dorsey in 2021, envisioned a significant overhaul of Twitter's business, culture, and product offerings, mirroring Nadella's acclaimed revitalization of Microsoft.
In an interview earlier this year, Agrawal stated, "When I took the job at Twitter, I was really inspired by Satya, and I used to call him the founder or a re-founder, or whatever you want to call that." He saw his CEO tenure as a critical moment to redefine Twitter's trajectory and ensure its distinctiveness within the competitive tech landscape.
Emulating a 'Re-founder' Mindset
Agrawal, who rose through Twitter's ranks as Chief Technology Officer before becoming CEO, emphasized that entrepreneurship isn't solely about launching a company from scratch. He described being a founder as "a state of mind," aspiring to emulate Nadella's ability to fundamentally reshape an established organization.
His ambition was to instill a similar spirit of innovation and strategic change at Twitter. "The inspiration I got on someone like completely changing a company, a business, a culture, a product came from Satya, and I thought of wanting to be a founder in that mold," Agrawal explained.
Unrealized Plans for Twitter
Agrawal also disclosed several major projects and ideas that were in motion before Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter in 2022 abruptly ended his leadership. These initiatives aimed to significantly evolve the platform, including changes to content moderation and its recommendation system.
- Project Saturn: A comprehensive initiative designed to overhaul Twitter's content moderation framework.
- Birdwatch (Community Notes): A collaborative moderation system, similar to the current Community Notes, which Agrawal was reportedly "super excited about" building.
- Recommendation System Changes: Plans to fundamentally alter how content was recommended to users on the platform.
While Twitter had already supported the decentralized social media project Bluesky prior to his CEO appointment, Agrawal's vision sought to extend these innovative approaches across the company's core operations. These ambitious plans, inspired by Nadella's transformative success, were ultimately halted by the change in ownership.
