TASHKENT, Uzbekistan – Indian citizens can now enjoy 30-day visa-free entry to Uzbekistan, a significant policy change announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's two-day state visit to Tashkent. The new regime, which takes effect immediately, is designed to enhance cooperation across trade, defense, and regional mobility between the two nations.
A New Era of Bilateral Cooperation
Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev made the announcement alongside PM Modi, highlighting the decision as a natural progression for two rapidly aligning economies. The move is expected to significantly contribute to people-to-people contacts, tourism, and business exchanges, capitalizing on the 14 weekly direct flights already connecting the countries.
“India is our reliable strategic partner. Last year, our bilateral trade exceeded USD 1 billion for the first time. In recent years, the number of joint ventures has increased sevenfold,” President Mirziyoyev stated, underscoring the growing economic ties that prompted the visa liberalization.
Boosting Tourism and Economic Growth
The strategic elimination of entry barriers is poised to encourage rapid growth in both commerce and leisure travel. With direct flights already facilitating easy access, the visa-free policy is set to make Uzbekistan a more attractive destination for Indian tourists and business leaders alike.
Beyond economic considerations, President Mirziyoyev also pointed to expanding cultural connections, referencing dedicated centers in Tashkent named after Indian leaders Lal Bahadur Shastri and Mahatma Gandhi, as well as a growing interest in Yoga across Uzbekistan.
Following his engagements in Tashkent, Prime Minister Modi is scheduled to travel to Bishkek for the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit, continuing his diplomatic tour.
