A fresh round of monsoon activity is anticipated to spread across significant portions of east and central India as new weather systems develop over the Bay of Bengal. Forecasters indicate that the next seven to ten days will be a crucial period for the Southwest Monsoon, with multiple low-pressure systems likely to form and move inland.
Atmospheric Convergence Sets Stage for Monsoon Boost
Weather conditions are creating a favorable environment for the upcoming monsoon activity. A long zone of atmospheric convergence has emerged, extending from the Bay of Bengal towards the western Pacific. These convergence zones serve as breeding grounds for organized weather systems, drawing in moisture-laden winds and fostering conditions conducive to the development of low-pressure systems (LPSs).
Low-Pressure Systems Expected to Enhance Rainfall
Several low-pressure systems are predicted to emerge along this convergence zone and track westward towards central India over the next five to seven days. As these systems move inland, they are expected to trigger widespread showers across the eastern and central parts of the country. This could provide a much-needed boost to rainfall in regions that have experienced deficits during the current monsoon season.
Early September Critical for Monsoon's Final Outcome
The first half of September is now considered particularly critical for India's overall monsoon performance in 2026. Rainfall during this period could significantly impact the final seasonal numbers, with forecasters suggesting a potential swing of approximately 5 percent, either above or below current levels, depending on the monsoon's activity.
Uneven Rainfall Distribution Across India
So far, the 2026 Southwest Monsoon has resulted in a highly uneven distribution of rainfall across India. Ladakh stands out as the region with the largest rainfall surplus, recording 204 percent above normal. Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu have seen a 51 percent surplus, while Odisha is 25 percent above normal. Delhi has also received 18 percent excess rainfall.
However, several states continue to face significant seasonal deficits. Meghalaya has recorded the sharpest shortfall at 58 percent below normal, followed by Manipur at minus 43 percent, and Bihar at minus 42 percent. Arunachal Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh are both approximately 40 percent below normal. Overall, India has received 587.8 mm of rainfall against a normal of 679.5 mm, resulting in a seasonal deficit of 13 percent. Despite this shortfall, the monsoon remains within the India Meteorological Department's (IMD) normal rainfall category. The developing Bay of Bengal systems and the expected rainfall in early September are poised to play a decisive role in determining the final outcome of the 2026 monsoon season.
