India Shifts to Digital Aadhaar Checks for Hotel Guests

· · 3 min read

India is transitioning away from physical Aadhaar photocopies for hotel check-ins, moving to a digital identity verification system. This change aims to bolster data privacy and prevent misuse by replacing paper-based methods with secure, consent-driven authentication.

The Shift Away from Physical Copies

Travellers checking into hotels across India can expect a significant change in how their identity is verified. The country is moving towards a new digital identity verification system, which aims to phase out the common practice of hotels collecting and storing physical photocopies of Aadhaar cards. This initiative is designed to enhance user data protection and mitigate privacy risks.

Under the updated framework, hotels will be expected to verify guests using secure digital methods provided by the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI). These methods include the official Aadhaar App, QR code-based authentication, or other approved digital verification APIs. While the mode of verification is changing, the fundamental requirement for identity proof during hotel check-ins remains mandatory.

Why the Change? Protecting Personal Data

This shift is part of a broader overhaul by UIDAI, driven by long-standing concerns over data privacy and the potential misuse of personal information. For years, numerous private establishments, including hotels, have routinely collected and retained photocopies or digital images of Aadhaar cards. UIDAI has consistently cautioned against the indiscriminate sharing and storage of Aadhaar copies due to the inherent privacy risks.

The new framework specifically seeks to replace these traditional paper-based verification processes with a consent-driven, technology-enabled authentication system. This ensures that guests have more control over their personal data and minimizes the exposure of sensitive information.

How Digital Verification Will Work

To implement the new system, hotels and other private entities wishing to verify customers via Aadhaar will need to register with UIDAI as authorized Offline Verification Seeking Entities (OVSEs). Once registered, these establishments will gain access to approved digital tools for identity verification.

The process will allow hotels to verify a guest's identity by scanning a secure QR code, utilizing the Aadhaar App, or integrating with UIDAI-approved offline verification APIs. This streamlined approach is designed to eliminate the need for hotels to collect, photocopy, or store physical Aadhaar cards, adhering to the principle of data minimisation.

Aadhaar Not Mandatory, ID Proof Still Required

It is crucial to understand that while the verification method is changing, the requirement for identity proof itself is not being abolished. Hotels will continue to be legally obligated to verify the identity of every guest, in compliance with existing regulations.

Furthermore, Aadhaar is not the sole acceptable form of identification. Travellers can still use other valid government-issued photo identity documents, such as passports, driving licences, or voter ID cards, or any other identification accepted by the hotel. The new Aadhaar verification ecosystem simply provides a more secure and privacy-centric option for those choosing to use their Aadhaar for verification.
