A Shared Academic Milestone
In a heartwarming moment at a recent Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras convocation, Jigisha Tailor, 45, and her son Aditya Kapadia, 21, shared the stage to receive their degrees. Both successfully completed IIT Madras's online BS in Data Science and Applications program, an unexpected joint achievement that resonated with attendees.
Although they enrolled at different times and pursued distinct qualifications within the program – Jigisha a diploma and Aditya a full BS degree – a classmate's discovery of their story led to them being called to the stage together, making for a truly memorable family occasion.
Jigisha's Inspiring Return to Education
Jigisha Tailor, a former electronics college professor in Bharuch, Gujarat, had left her teaching career in 2019 to focus on family responsibilities after 16 years. Her return to academics three years later was largely spurred by her son's persistent encouragement.
Watching Aditya engage with subjects like statistics and computer systems, which complemented her electronics background, reignited her passion for learning. She enrolled in the IIT Madras online program towards the end of 2022, eager to embrace new concepts in data science.
Aditya's Path into Data Science
Aditya Kapadia began his journey with IIT Madras's online BS in Data Science and Applications in 2021 at the age of 18. The COVID-19 pandemic had shifted higher education online, making the program an attractive option for his interest in data science and artificial intelligence.
Initially, Aditya pursued a physical diploma alongside the IIT Madras program, as was required at the time. However, once the IIT Madras Senate recognized the BS degree as equivalent to a four-year undergraduate program, he discontinued the diploma to focus solely on his data science studies.
Balancing Responsibilities and Studies
Jigisha's academic pursuit while managing household responsibilities required a strict routine. She dedicated early morning hours, from 4:30 AM to 7 AM, and resumed studying in the afternoon after completing her daily chores. Despite some relatives questioning her decision to study again, her family, especially her husband, a college professor himself, offered unwavering support and encouragement.
The flexibility of IIT Madras's online program was crucial, allowing learners like Jigisha to progress at their own pace, taking one or two subjects per semester. Aditya highlighted this adaptability as a significant strength, benefiting working professionals and those returning to education.
Study Partners and Friendly Rivals
Over time, the mother-son duo evolved into study partners, and even friendly competitors. Aditya noted a natural sense of rivalry, particularly when striving for top 'A' or 'S' grades. This healthy competition motivated each to perform better.
Having started the program earlier, Aditya also provided valuable assistance to his mother, helping her prepare for upcoming subjects, viva examinations, and online proctored tests. Their shared academic journey not only strengthened their bond but also allowed Aditya to see a new, inspiring side of his mother.
What's Next for the Duo?
Aditya completed his BS degree in 2024 and quickly transitioned from a data science internship to a full-time role at Syngenta. Jigisha also finished her program around the same time but has decided to delay her job search to support her younger son through his Class 12 examinations. She is, however, considering returning to teaching, with her husband suggesting guest lectures at his college.
Aditya reflects on their shared experience as deeply inspiring, emphasizing how studying together allowed him to witness his mother's resilience and dedication firsthand, further solidifying their relationship.
