iPhone Screen Privacy Hack: Use Back Tap & White Point, Skip Glass Protectors

· · 3 min read

iPhone users can enhance screen privacy without special protectors by leveraging accessibility settings. A quick setup combines Reduce White Point and Back Tap for instant display dimming, making your screen harder to view from angles.

Enhance Your iPhone Screen Privacy with a Simple Hack

Worried about prying eyes viewing your iPhone screen in public? While physical privacy screen protectors are an option, Apple's built-in accessibility features offer a clever software solution. By combining the 'Reduce White Point' setting with a 'Back Tap' shortcut, you can instantly dim your display, making it significantly harder for others to see your content from an angle.

This method doesn't require any third-party apps or hardware and can be toggled on and off with a simple double-tap on the back of your device. Here's a step-by-step guide to setting up your own iPhone screen privacy hack.

How to Set Up Your iPhone Privacy Feature

Step 1: Access Display & Text Size Settings

First, you need to locate the relevant display settings on your iPhone:

  • Open the Settings app.
  • Tap on Accessibility.
  • Select Display & Text Size.

Step 2: Configure Reduce White Point

This setting is key to the privacy effect. You'll set it up temporarily to prepare it for the shortcut:

  1. Scroll down and tap on Reduce White Point to enable it.
  2. Drag the slider all the way to 100%. This dramatically reduces the intensity of bright colors and white areas on your screen.
  3. Once set to 100%, turn Reduce White Point off again. This ensures the setting is configured but not actively dimming your screen until you activate the shortcut.

Step 3: Create a White Point Shortcut

Now, you'll create a shortcut that allows you to toggle the 'Reduce White Point' feature:

  • Open the Shortcuts app on your iPhone.
  • Tap the + icon in the top-right corner to create a new shortcut.
  • Tap the search bar and type "Set White Point".
  • Select Set White Point from the results.
  • At the top of the action, you'll see "Turn White Point On." Tap "Turn" and change it to Toggle.
  • Your shortcut is now ready. You can give it a descriptive name like "Privacy Screen" if you wish.

Step 4: Link to Back Tap

The 'Back Tap' feature will be your quick trigger for the privacy screen:

  • Go back to the Settings app.
  • Tap Accessibility, then select Touch.
  • Scroll down and tap Back Tap.
  • Choose either Double Tap or Triple Tap (Double Tap is generally more convenient).
  • Scroll down the list of actions until you find your newly created "Set White Point" shortcut (or whatever you named it) and select it.

Step 5: Activate Your Privacy Screen

That's it! Your iPhone is now configured. Whenever you need to reduce the brightness and intensity of your display for more privacy, simply double-tap (or triple-tap, if you chose that option) the back of your iPhone. The White Point setting will toggle on, instantly dimming your screen.

Double-tap the back again when you want to switch it off and return your display to normal brightness. This provides a fast, discreet way to manage your screen's visibility without navigating through settings or relying on external accessories.

Note: This is a software-based dimming solution, not a hardware privacy filter. While it makes your screen significantly harder to see clearly from side angles, it does not offer the same level of absolute black-out privacy as some physical screen protectors.
