BCCI Seeks New Selector After Agarkar's Tenure Ends; Applications Open

· · 2 min read

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has opened applications for one position on the Men’s Selection Committee. This follows the completion of Ajit Agarkar's tenure as chairman, with the deadline for applications set for October 14, 2026.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially initiated the search for a new member of its Senior Men’s Selection Committee. This move comes after Ajit Agarkar concluded his tenure as the committee's chairman, a role he assumed in July 2023.

Vacancy Details and Application Process

The BCCI has invited applications for a single vacancy on the five-member Men’s Selection Committee. Aspiring candidates have until October 14, 2026, at 5 PM IST, to submit their applications. Following a screening process, shortlisted applicants will be called for personal interviews to determine the suitable candidate.

While the BCCI's notification did not explicitly name Agarkar, the opening of this specific position directly corresponds with his departure from the panel. Former India spinner Pragyan Ojha is currently serving as interim chief selector as the committee prepares for upcoming international fixtures.

Key Responsibilities of the New Selector

The individual appointed to this crucial role will undertake several significant responsibilities aimed at shaping the future of Indian cricket. These include:

  • Selecting the Senior National Men’s Team across all formats: Tests, One Day Internationals (ODIs), and T20Is.
  • Ensuring a transparent and equitable team selection process.
  • Actively scouting and assessing players through various domestic and international matches.
  • Identifying emerging talent to build a robust bench strength for Team India.
  • Attending team meetings and traveling for match observations as required.
  • Preparing quarterly performance evaluation reports for the BCCI Apex Council.
  • Addressing media inquiries regarding team selections when instructed by the BCCI.
  • Playing a role in the appointment of captains for different formats.

Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

The BCCI has outlined specific playing experience and retirement requirements for candidates interested in the selection committee position. Applicants must meet at least one of the following criteria:

  • Played a minimum of 7 Test matches.
  • Played a minimum of 30 First-Class matches.
  • Played a minimum of 10 ODIs and 20 First-Class matches.

Additionally, all candidates must have retired from professional cricket at least five years prior to their application. The BCCI also stipulates that any individual who has cumulatively served on a BCCI Cricket Committee for five years or more is ineligible for this Men’s Selection Committee role.
