A New Era for Indian Women's Cricket

Senior Indian opener Smriti Mandhana has been officially appointed as the new captain of the Indian women's cricket team. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced the decision on October 6, 2026, marking a significant leadership transition as Mandhana succeeds Harmanpreet Kaur in the full-time white-ball captaincy role.

Mandhana's appointment ushers in a new chapter for Indian women’s cricket. She brings extensive experience, having been a integral part of the national squad since 2013 and establishing herself as one of the sport's premier batters globally.

Mandhana's Leadership Journey

While this marks her first permanent appointment as India's white-ball captain, Smriti Mandhana is no stranger to leading the national side. The BCCI confirmed her prior experience, noting she has captained India in 18 T20 Internationals and four One Day Internationals.

Her leadership credentials have been further solidified by her impressive performances in franchise cricket. Most notably, Mandhana successfully led the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) to two Women's Premier League (WPL) titles in 2024 and 2026, showcasing her ability to guide a team to championship glory.

Statements from BCCI and Mandhana

The BCCI expressed strong confidence in Mandhana's capabilities, stating, "Having been part of the Indian team since 2013, Smriti brings considerable experience into the role." The board emphasized that her extensive experience and leadership qualities will be crucial as the team embarks on this new phase.

Speaking after her appointment, Mandhana described leading India as a "very special honour." She extended her gratitude to the BCCI, the selection committee, her teammates, and the supporters for placing their trust in her. Mandhana also acknowledged Harmanpreet Kaur's significant contributions as captain, commending her commitment and pivotal role in the team's journey.

Mandhana articulated her understanding of the immense responsibility that comes with leading the national team. She expressed her eagerness to collaborate with the squad, continue learning, and contribute to the ongoing advancement of Indian cricket.

BCCI's Confidence in New Captain

BCCI President Mithun Manhas congratulated Mandhana, highlighting that her experience, deep understanding of the game, and proven ability to lead from the front would be invaluable in her new position. BCCI Honorary Secretary Devajit Saikia echoed this sentiment, underscoring Mandhana's temperament and referencing her successful tenure as RCB captain in the WPL as clear evidence of her leadership prowess.

With Smriti Mandhana now at the helm, the Indian women's team enters a fresh leadership era, with the star opener tasked with building upon the substantial progress achieved by the side in recent years.
