Indian employers are rapidly enhancing their employee benefits packages, moving beyond basic health insurance to offer more comprehensive healthcare solutions. A recent report, "The Standard of Employee Benefits 2026–27" by Plum, highlights a notable trend: a ₹5 lakh health cover is increasingly becoming the baseline for employee medical insurance across the country.
Significant Growth in Health and Life Benefits
The study reveals a substantial increase in the scope of benefits provided by companies. Since FY22, the share of employers offering a sum insured of more than ₹5 lakh has risen by 53%. This indicates a clear shift towards more robust financial protection for employees and their families against medical expenses.
Beyond general health cover, other key benefits have also seen remarkable growth:
- Maternity Cover: Employers offering maternity benefits above ₹75,000 have increased by a significant 155%.
- Group Term Life (GTL) and Personal Accident (GPA) Cover: The provision of these essential protections has surged by 179% over the same period.
What was once considered a premium benefits package just a few years ago is now becoming commonplace, with the 2023–24 top-quartile organization now reflecting the median standard in 2025–26 for insurance and healthcare measures.
Rising Investment in Employee Wellbeing
The expansion of benefits is mirrored by a greater financial commitment from employers. The median investment in health benefits per employee has grown at a 14.7% compound annual growth rate over the last three years. This increase is attributed not only to rising healthcare inflation but also to a deliberate improvement in the quality and breadth of coverage.
Healthcare's share of the total benefits budget has also expanded, rising from 3% to 6.1% since FY23. Concurrently, median healthcare spending per employee has more than doubled. Companies are adding an average of two more healthcare benefits beyond traditional insurance, with telehealth, health check-ups, and mental health support becoming increasingly prevalent.
Shift Towards Holistic Healthcare
This trend signifies a strategic pivot from an "insurance-first" model to one of holistic healthcare. Employers are combining traditional insurance with preventive and primary care services, aiming for a more comprehensive approach to employee wellbeing. This shift is evident across various employer categories, although funded startups often lead the adoption to attract talent, while local Indian businesses are gradually catching up.
For employees, this means a more encompassing benefits package that extends beyond the headline insurance sum. It includes higher coverage, crucial preventive care, mental health resources, telehealth options, and broader family protection, reflecting a deeper commitment by employers to their workforce's overall health and security.
