Former railway officer Sudhanshu Mani, renowned for leading the development of the Vande Bharat Express, has publicly condemned Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) for its response to severe misconduct allegations at its Nashik BPO unit. Mani characterized the company's handling of the situation as "abysmal," calling for urgent and visible accountability from the highest echelons of the organization.
Serious Allegations at TCS Nashik BPO
In a detailed blog post, Mani highlighted reports detailing a disturbing pattern of alleged sexual harassment, stalking, exploitation, and molestation spanning more than three years within the Nashik facility. Compounding these claims are allegations of religious coercion, where female employees were reportedly pressured to perform namaz, consume beef against their beliefs, and even consider religious conversion.
Mani further noted that repeated complaints regarding these issues were allegedly dismissed by HR personnel, including manager Nida Khan, who reportedly categorized such incidents as "common in MNC culture."
TCS Response Deemed Insufficient
In the wake of the public outcry, Tata Sons chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran described the incident as "gravely concerning" and initiated an internal inquiry led by COO Aarthi Subramanian. However, Mani views this response as an "understatement" and "clearly insufficient" for a Tata group entity that prides itself on ethical leadership and corporate culture.
"This outrage demanded visible and immediate accountability," Mani asserted, emphasizing that responsibility must be fixed at the highest levels, including the head of the Nashik unit. While acknowledging the need for legal pursuit of the religious coercion allegations, Mani stressed that the paramount concern remains the safety, dignity, and equality of women in the workplace.
Lessons from Integral Coach Factory
Drawing on his own experience, Mani recounted how he addressed sexual harassment complaints during his tenure as General Manager at the Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai, where the Vande Bharat Express was conceived. He recalled a specific incident where an employee allegedly entered a female hostel room and attempted molestation.
Despite the case initially being suppressed and the complaint withdrawn, Mani reopened it. He described a swift and decisive process: "We decided that he would verify the facts informally but rigorously, and if found true, the employee would be dismissed the same day." Citing government empowerment for such actions when inquiry is impractical, Mani confirmed the dismissal order was issued by evening. Over the subsequent year, four similar major incidents were handled with summary dismissals, with minor cases resulting in removal from duty and public censure.
A Call for Corporate Integrity
Mani concluded by stating that the TCS episode should serve as a critical wake-up call for corporate India. He underscored that "institutions decline when misconduct is ignored and accountability is delayed," advocating for "swift, transparent action" to rebuild trust and ensure a harassment-free environment where women can function without fear.
