PayPal Cuts Over 600 India Jobs as Part of Global Cost-Cutting Plan

· · 2 min read

Digital payments giant PayPal is laying off over 600 employees in India, representing 10% of its local workforce. The cuts, affecting staff in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad, are part of a wider global restructuring aimed at streamlining operations and reducing costs.

PayPal, the prominent digital payment platform, has initiated significant workforce reductions in India, impacting more than 600 employees. This move, which accounts for approximately 10% of its Indian workforce, is a component of a broader global restructuring strategy designed to enhance operational efficiency and reduce expenditures.

Impact Across Key Indian Cities and Divisions

The layoffs have affected employees across PayPal's offices in Chennai, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Multiple divisions within the company have seen staff reductions, including technology, engineering, operations, payments, and finance departments. This wide-ranging impact underscores the comprehensive nature of PayPal's global transformation efforts.

A PayPal spokesperson confirmed the staffing changes, stating, "The recent staffing changes are part of our previously announced multi-year transformation to simplify our global operations, strengthen execution, and position the company for long-term growth. Decisions like these are never easy. We recognise the impact they have on our employees and are committed to supporting them through this transition."

Broader Global Restructuring and Future Outlook

These job cuts in India are aligned with PayPal's previously announced plans for a worldwide reduction in its workforce. Earlier reports indicated that the company intended to cut around 20% of its global employees, totaling approximately 4,760 jobs, over several years. The current layoffs are part of this phased approach, with initial impacts expected in the Asia-Pacific region, including India, before potentially extending to employees in the US, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.

The company's strategic overhaul also involves accelerating the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and further lowering operating costs. This long-term vision aims to streamline PayPal's global operations and ensure sustained growth in a competitive digital payments landscape.
