How iPhone Handoff Works
The core concept behind the iPhone Handoff feature is the designation of a 'main' iPhone and a 'companion' iPhone. Users can configure this setup through their device's Settings under the Cellular menu. The primary eSIM remains active on the main iPhone, while a companion eSIM is assigned to the secondary device. This intelligent system ensures that the same phone number can be actively used on whichever iPhone the user is currently operating.
While the cellular settings are primarily managed from the main iPhone, location sharing dynamically links to the device actively using the phone number at any given moment. This means your shared location will update based on which iPhone is currently in use, providing accurate presence information.
Carrier Support is Crucial
For iPhone Handoff to function, both iPhones must be running iOS 27. However, compatible hardware alone may not suffice. The feature will also require active support from cellular carriers. Early reports suggest that providers like T-Mobile in the US and Deutsche Telekom in Germany could be among the first to offer this functionality.
