Thailand has reinstated visa-free travel for Indian passport holders, a move aimed at boosting tourism from one of its largest source markets. However, new regulations now cap the maximum permitted stay at 30 days, a reduction from the previous 60-day allowance.
In addition to the revised stay limit, all travelers, including those from visa-exempt countries like India, are now required to complete a Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) before boarding their flights. This mandatory pre-arrival declaration must be filled out online via Thailand's official immigration portal, and travelers should carry the confirmation for immigration.
The Mandatory Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC)
The TDAC is an electronic form that replaces the traditional paper arrival cards. It collects essential information such as travel details, passport information, flight specifics, planned accommodation in Thailand, and the purpose of the visit. Authorities emphasize that the TDAC must be completed online prior to departure, not upon arrival, to avoid potential boarding denial or immigration delays.
Introduced last year, the TDAC streamlines the entry process and is a non-negotiable requirement for all visitors to Thailand, regardless of their visa status.
Why the 30-Day Stay Limit?
The decision to reduce the visa-free stay from 60 to 30 days is part of a broader government initiative to curb the misuse of the visa-free regime. Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's administration noted concerns from local businesses in popular tourist areas regarding foreign nationals potentially working without proper authorization or violating their entry conditions. The tighter window aims to differentiate genuine tourists from those exploiting the arrangement.
Thai Tourism Minister Surasak Phancharoenworakul confirmed the adjusted policy, acknowledging the government's flexibility to review the measure if future issues arise. India's importance as a tourism market, trailing only China and Malaysia, played a significant role in the government's decision to retain visa-free access after initial proposals suggested its removal, which had already led to a decline in Indian arrivals.
Similar 30-day visa-free entry is also extended to visitors from countries including Croatia, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Malta, and the Maldives under the updated framework.
What Indian Travelers Need to Know
Before planning a trip to Thailand, Indian travelers must ensure two critical requirements are met:
- Valid Passport: Your passport must have at least six months of validity beyond your intended return date.
- Completed TDAC: The Thailand Digital Arrival Card must be filled out online and confirmed before you board your flight. Carry the confirmation for presentation at immigration.
Adhering to these updated regulations will ensure a smooth and enjoyable travel experience to Thailand.
