Tata MF Recommends 70:30 Gold-Silver Allocation for Precious Metals Portfolio

· · 3 min read

Tata Mutual Fund suggests a 70:30 gold-to-silver allocation for precious metals portfolios. This strategy balances gold's defensive stability with silver's potential for industrial growth, acknowledging silver's higher near-term volatility.

In its latest outlook, Tata Mutual Fund has outlined a strategic preference for gold over silver within a diversified precious metals portfolio, recommending a 70:30 gold-to-silver allocation. This approach emphasizes gold's role as a defensive asset while still recognizing silver's significant long-term growth potential.

Gold: The Core of Stability

Tata MF's larger allocation to gold stems from its defensive characteristics and relatively lower volatility. Gold serves as a crucial hedge against macroeconomic uncertainty and currency debasement risks. Recent weeks have seen gold prices recover, supported by softer US economic data and easing bond yields. Despite potential near-term volatility driven by interest rate expectations, dollar movements, and bond yields, the fund house remains optimistic about gold's medium to long-term prospects.

  • Central Bank Demand: Official sector gold purchases surged to 289 tonnes in the second quarter, marking the strongest second-quarter buying on record and bringing the first half total to 345 tonnes. This sustained institutional demand provides a strong structural support.
  • Investment Demand: Consistent investment interest and the need for portfolio diversification continue to underpin gold's appeal.

Silver: Growth Potential with Higher Volatility

Silver, functioning as both a precious metal and an industrial commodity, offers a different risk-reward profile. Tata MF identifies substantial long-term growth drivers for silver, particularly from its increasing adoption in:

  • Electronics and AI-related hardware
  • Renewable energy infrastructure
  • Solar applications

However, silver is expected to experience greater near-term volatility. Factors such as moderation in solar installations and easing supply tightness have reduced some immediate demand catalysts. The metal's price remains more sensitive to the health of the global economy and broader industrial demand trends. The gold-silver ratio, which rose from approximately 51 in May to 70, illustrates the market's current preference for gold as a defensive play, with silver's industrial exposure making it more susceptible to growth and interest-rate concerns.

Long-Term Outlook and Investment Strategy

Despite the lower allocation, Tata MF holds a bullish long-term view on silver. The outlook forecasts 2026 to be the sixth consecutive year of silver deficits, with industrial applications accounting for the majority of consumption. China's significant role in the silver supply chain, holding about 11% of global reserves and controlling 60-70% of refining capacity, could also impact global supply dynamics if domestic availability is prioritized.

Given silver's higher volatility, Tata MF advises a staggered investment approach over a medium-to-long-term horizon. The overall strategy positions gold as the primary exposure to precious metals, with silver complementing this by capturing longer-term industrial and structural growth themes.
