Mandatory Aadhaar for Subsidized LPG Refills
From October 1, domestic Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumers in India will be required to complete biometric Aadhaar authentication to purchase refills at the government-regulated subsidized price. This new mandate aims to streamline the distribution of benefits and prevent misuse, though it does not mean an immediate halt to LPG supply for unauthenticated households.
What Happens If You Don't Authenticate?
Households that have not completed their Aadhaar authentication will still be able to procure LPG cylinders. However, these purchases will be at the applicable market price, without any subsidy. Oil marketing companies (OMCs) will allow consumers to register their choice through digital channels (websites, apps, WhatsApp, IVRS) if they do not wish to or cannot complete the authentication. Such consumers may then opt for 5 kg or 10 kg cylinders, subject to local availability, at market rates.
High Authentication Rates Already Achieved
According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG), a significant majority of consumers have already complied. As of September 19, 2026, approximately 274.3 million active domestic LPG consumers, representing 89.9% of the total, had successfully completed their biometric Aadhaar authentication. Consumers who have already completed this process do not need to re-authenticate.
Why the Government is Implementing This Policy
The government states that the primary objective of this authentication exercise is to ensure that LPG subsidy benefits accurately reach genuine and eligible households. The initiative is also designed to identify and eliminate duplicate or ineligible connections, thereby curbing the diversion of subsidized domestic cylinders for unauthorized commercial or industrial use.
How to Complete Your Aadhaar Authentication
Consumers have several convenient options to complete the required authentication:
- Through their LPG delivery personnel using the OMC's mobile application.
- By visiting their nearest LPG distributor's showroom.
- Via the relevant Oil Marketing Company's official mobile application.
Specific apps include IndianOil ONE for Indane customers, HelloBPCL for Bharatgas users, and HP PAY for HP Gas consumers. It is crucial for consumers to use only official OMC channels and exercise caution, avoiding the sharing of Aadhaar OTPs or other sensitive information with unknown callers or agents.
Understanding the LPG Subsidy
The implicit subsidy on a 14.2-kg LPG cylinder was approximately ₹210 in September 2026. This subsidy fluctuates based on market conditions. The government has also provided substantial compensation to OMCs to help keep domestic LPG affordable, including ₹22,000 crore in FY2022-23 and projected amounts of ₹30,000 crore for both FY2026 and FY2027. Despite this, accumulated under-recoveries for public-sector OMCs on domestic LPG exceeded ₹62,000 crore as of August 31, 2026.
