The global economic landscape in 2026 is expected to present a varied picture, with emerging markets poised for more robust expansion compared to many advanced economies. Projections, derived from the International Monetary Fund’s (IMF) World Economic Outlook and presented by Visual Capitalist, highlight India, Indonesia, and China as the frontrunners among major global economies.
India Leads Global Growth Projections
India is forecast to achieve a significant 6.2% real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in 2026, solidifying its position as the fastest-growing major economy in this comparison. This follows an estimated growth of 6.6% in 2025, consistently placing India well ahead of other large economies.
Recent data from the Reserve Bank of India indicates a strong start to the 2026-27 fiscal year, with real GDP growth accelerating to 7.8% in Q1, driven by robust manufacturing and services sectors. Investments surged by 11.9%, household consumption grew 7.1%, and exports saw a 12.0% increase. This momentum continued into July, with industrial production up 6.7% and cumulative merchandise and services exports rising 13.16% year-on-year. India's projected growth rate is more than three times that of several advanced economies, underscoring the divergence between emerging and developed markets.
Strong Performance from Other Emerging Markets
Indonesia is projected to expand by 4.9% in 2026, mirroring its anticipated growth rate for 2025. This positions the Southeast Asian nation behind India but notably ahead of most advanced economies. China is also expected to demonstrate strong growth, with a projected 4.2% expansion in 2026, a slight moderation from its 4.8% forecast in 2025. Despite this, China's growth remains among the strongest recorded by major economies.
Advanced Economies Face Slower Expansion
In contrast, the outlook for several developed economies is considerably more subdued. The United States economy is projected to grow by 2.1% in 2026, while the United Kingdom is expected to expand by 1.3%. Japan's growth is forecast at a modest 0.6%, with both France and Germany projected to grow by 0.9%. Brazil is anticipated to grow by 1.9%, and Russia by 1.0%.
