Rooftop Solar: Why a Grid Connection is Essential for Uninterrupted Power

India's rooftop solar adoption is growing, but systems require a grid connection for uninterrupted 24/7 electricity. Standard installations shut down during power outages, and battery storage, while providing off-grid backup, is not covered by current subsidies.

As India accelerates its adoption of renewable energy, particularly through initiatives like the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, many homeowners are installing rooftop solar systems. A common misconception, however, is that these systems can provide continuous electricity independently without a connection to the main power grid.

The Grid's Crucial Role in 24/7 Power

For a rooftop solar system (RTS) to ensure a 24-hour electricity supply, it is crucial that it remains connected to the power grid. Bhavna Tyagi, Programme Leader at the Council on Energy, Environment and Water, emphasizes that while solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours, a grid connection is vital for ensuring power at night, during cloudy weather, or when household electricity demand surpasses the system's daytime generation.

This grid connection also facilitates net metering, a system that significantly reduces consumers' electricity bills. Through net metering, any excess electricity generated by the solar panels and not immediately consumed by the household is exported back to the grid. Consumers can receive credits or compensation for this surplus power, potentially leading to substantial savings or even earnings from their solar investment.

Understanding Grid Connection and Limitations

A grid is an extensive, interconnected network in the electrical industry. It uses transmission lines and substations to deliver power from generating stations to homes, businesses, and industries, forming the backbone of the entire electricity supply system. This infrastructure ensures the efficient and consistent delivery of power.

Despite the benefits of a grid-connected system, homeowners should be aware of a significant limitation: standard grid-connected rooftop solar plants automatically shut down during grid failures. This safety measure means that solar panels alone do not guarantee backup power during blackouts or power outages. For an off-grid system to provide uninterrupted 24/7 power, it must be paired with battery storage. However, under the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, while capital subsidies are available for grid-connected rooftop solar systems, the battery component for storage is not currently covered by the subsidy scheme.

Costs and Potential Earnings

By generating sufficient electricity to meet a household's needs, a rooftop solar system can dramatically reduce monthly power bills, potentially to zero. However, consumers with grid-connected systems are still typically required to pay fixed grid charges, which generally range between ₹100 and ₹400 per month, depending on their connection type and sanctioned load.

Beyond savings, a grid-connected solar system can also become an additional source of income. By exporting surplus electricity to the grid via net metering, consumers may receive credits or direct compensation based on local regulations and utility policies. This not only helps offset energy costs but can also turn a solar installation into a modest income-generating asset.
