Indian IT services giant Wipro is significantly expanding the rollout of its internal productivity tracking tool, TimeScope, across its workforce in India. The software, installed on company-issued laptops and desktops, provides employees and managers with a dashboard detailing digital activity and time spent on work-related applications.
How TimeScope Monitors Digital Activity
TimeScope is designed to track login duration and identify periods of inactivity on Wipro-issued devices. The system monitors usage of core work applications such as Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and the Chrome browser. This data is then compiled into a dashboard accessible to both employees and their managers.
Potential Leave Deductions for Inactivity
A key aspect of TimeScope's implementation is its potential to trigger leave deductions. According to internal company FAQs, if an employee has no recorded device login activity, approved leave, office swipe, or client-site visit for a scheduled working day, it may result in a leave deduction. Wipro has stated that employees will have the ability to contest any incorrectly recorded leave deductions.
However, Wipro has clarified that the software does not monitor personal activities, keystrokes, or screen content. Timesheets will continue to serve as the official record for effort reporting.
Why Wipro is Enhancing Productivity Monitoring
The rollout of TimeScope follows similar initiatives reported at other major IT firms, including Cognizant and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), though TCS has publicly denied tracking individual employee activity, stating its systems monitor network performance. Wipro's move comes amid increasing pressure on IT companies to demonstrate improved productivity and tangible returns, particularly with the growing adoption of artificial intelligence and automation technologies.
The company's decision is also linked to evolving client demands and an industry-wide shift towards outcome-based projects. Wipro recently reported a 16% operating margin in the April-June quarter, a 130 basis point decline year-on-year, alongside a three-year streak of revenue decline, underscoring the company's focus on operational efficiency.
