RG Hospitals, a prominent 17-center hospital chain, is strategically expanding its surgical service portfolio beyond its traditional urology focus. The group is making significant investments in advanced robotic surgical systems and growing its general surgery division, which now constitutes a substantial portion of its business.
Diversifying Surgical Offerings
Currently, urology procedures account for approximately 55% of RG Hospitals' operations. However, general surgery has rapidly grown to represent 40% of its business, with gynecology making up the remaining 5%. This diversification reflects a deliberate strategy to broaden its patient care capabilities.
The addition of general surgery began around 2005, evolving to include a wide range of procedures such as gallbladder removal, hernia repairs, and colorectal surgeries, including specialized proctology services. The gynecology department offers fibroid surgeries, myomectomies, ovarian cyst procedures, and hysterectomies, utilizing both laparoscopic and robotic techniques.
Investment and Market Position
The hospital chain's growth trajectory has attracted private equity interest. In October 2024, a fund managed by Morgan Stanley Private Equity Asia acquired a majority stake in RG Scientific Enterprises through a $59 million transaction. At the time, RG operated nearly 500 beds across its 13 hospitals and four outreach centers.
The organized urology market in India remains largely fragmented. An Avendus report for FY24 estimated the total urology market at ₹27,000-28,000 crore, with organized chains comprising only 2-3% (₹650-700 crore). Within this organized segment, RG Stone (RG Hospitals) holds a significant 33% market share, positioning it as a key player.
Embracing Robotic Technology
RG Hospitals is at the forefront of adopting robotic surgical advancements, with multiple systems already installed and an order placed for four additional Da Vinci Xi systems. Avinash Ojha, CEO at RG Hospitals, highlighted the increasing use of robotic technology, particularly for complex procedures that traditionally required open surgery.
The hospital plans to integrate robotic and minimally invasive techniques across a broader spectrum of abdominal and pelvic procedures. This includes kidney, ureter, and bladder surgeries within urology, as well as gallbladder, hernia, and colorectal operations in general surgery, enhancing precision and patient outcomes.
Origins and Reach
Founded in 1987 as a lithotripsy center in Mumbai, RG Hospitals has steadily expanded its footprint across India. Today, it operates five hospitals and three outreach clinics in Delhi NCR, two centers each in Punjab and Mumbai, and individual facilities in Dehradun, Goa, and Chennai. Kolkata hosts one hospital and one outreach center, underscoring the chain's extensive national presence.
