Khan Market Shops Close Amid CJP Protest, Traders Report ₹1.5 Lakh Daily Loss Per Shop

· · 2 min read

Khan Market businesses in Delhi have shut down due to a protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), citing fears of property damage and significant financial losses. The Khan Market Traders Association reports daily losses of up to ₹1.5 lakh per shop from the closures.

Businesses in Delhi's upscale Khan Market have proactively closed their doors in response to a protest organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) in the national capital. This precautionary measure comes amid concerns from traders about potential damage to commercial establishments and mounting financial losses.

Sanjiv Mehra, president of the Khan Market Traders Association, stated that the decision to shut shops was made to mitigate risks from protesters gathering near commercial zones. He emphasized the vulnerability of markets like Khan Market when demonstrations occur in their vicinity, raising fears of damage to shops and property.

Significant Financial Burden for Traders

The closures impose a substantial financial burden on businesses, particularly in premium commercial areas where operational expenses remain high regardless of whether shops are open. Mehra highlighted that establishments in markets such as Khan Market, Connaught Place, and South Extension incur significant costs, including rent and salaries, even when their doors are shut.

According to Mehra, a single day of closure can result in losses ranging from ₹1 lakh to ₹1.5 lakh per shop. This figure underscores the severe economic impact on individual businesses.

Perishable Goods Add to Losses

Adding to the financial strain, businesses dealing in perishable goods face additional challenges. Products like fruits and groceries can spoil or go to waste when shops remain closed for extended periods. These losses exacerbate the financial pressure on traders already contending with fixed expenses and disruptions to their regular business activities.

Appeal for Peaceful Protests Away from Markets

The Khan Market shutdown brings into focus the broader consequences of public demonstrations on Delhi’s commercial establishments. Even temporary disruptions can significantly affect sales, customer footfall, and daily operations across the city.

Mehra appealed to political parties to reconsider their approach to demonstrations, urging them to ensure that protests remain peaceful and are held away from busy commercial areas. He stressed the importance of balancing the right to protest with the crucial need to protect commercial activity and the livelihoods it supports.

Traders' concerns have intensified amidst the heightened activity surrounding the CJP protest in Delhi, forcing businesses in affected areas to weigh precautionary closures against the considerable financial costs of suspending operations.
