Sonam Wangchuk Threatens Fast, Padyatra After Delhi Protest Detentions

· · 2 min read

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has warned of new protests, including an indefinite fast or padyatra, if leaders and activists detained in Delhi are not released by October 11. He described the situation as an "undeclared Emergency" following arrests linked to a protest demanding the Chief Election Commissioner's resignation.

Climate activist Sonam Wangchuk has issued a stern warning, stating he will consider an indefinite fast or a foot march (padyatra) if political leaders and activists detained in Delhi are not released by October 11. Wangchuk characterized the current situation as an "undeclared Emergency" in the world's largest democracy.

His remarks, posted on X (formerly Twitter) on October 10, 2026, expressed profound concern over the arrests. The detentions are linked to a protest organized by the CJP at Jantar Mantar in the national capital. The demonstration called for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, citing alleged irregularities in the revision of electoral rolls.

Protest and High-Profile Detentions

The CJP-led protest drew significant attention, including participation from various opposition leaders and activists. As security restrictions were enforced across parts of Delhi, police detained several individuals associated with the demonstration. Among those reportedly taken into custody were prominent political figures like Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal.

Wangchuk, known for his environmental advocacy, emphasized that he had initially appealed for unity and peace among protesters. He had also expressed support for the movement despite not attending the Delhi protest himself, citing ongoing work related to water security and winter preparations in Ladakh.

Wangchuk's Ultimatum

Expressing disappointment at the detentions, Wangchuk stated, "I hope those arrested will be released soon. I will be compelled to consider an Anshan Fast or Padyatra March if they are not released by tomorrow." This ultimatum underscores his resolve to escalate his protest if the detained individuals are not freed by the specified deadline of October 11.

The activist's latest statement signals a potential new phase of agitation, drawing further attention to the contentious issue of electoral transparency and the right to peaceful protest in India.
