India-EU Free Trade Agreement Set for 2027 Rollout, Says EU Ambassador

· · 2 min read

The landmark India-EU Free Trade Agreement is slated to enter into force in 2027, according to EU Ambassador Jean-Eric Paquet. The pact, described as a "game changer," aims to strengthen supply chains, boost defense, and align economic security beyond traditional tariff reductions.

The long-anticipated Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between India and the European Union is projected to come into force in 2027, announced EU Ambassador to India Jean-Eric Paquet. Paquet characterized the forthcoming framework as an "absolute game changer," emphasizing its profound implications that extend beyond conventional tariff reductions, fostering a strategic alignment designed to bolster resilience against global disruptions.

A Strategic Partnership Beyond Tariffs

Ambassador Paquet highlighted that the agreement's scope transcends standard commercial exchanges. It is envisioned as a foundational bridge to harmonize technological innovation and economic security between the two major economies. He stressed that under this framework, "India's sovereignty and Europe's strategic autonomy reinforce one another."

The EU envoy elaborated on the benefits, stating that the agreement would facilitate freer trade, strengthen supply chains through increased trade and investment, enhance their resilience, and diminish strategic dependencies for both sides.

Boosting Defense and Maritime Security

A significant aspect of the FTA and the parallel Investment Protection Agreement is their expected contribution to defense collaboration and maritime security initiatives. Paquet noted that efforts to strengthen industrial supply chains through these agreements would directly benefit their respective defense industries.

Referring to the existing India-EU Security and Defence Partnership, Paquet affirmed that leaders on both sides recognize the critical need to deepen security cooperation in conjunction with bilateral commerce.

Implementation and Economic Impact

Negotiators are working towards finalizing the federal text of the agreement by late 2026. However, Paquet cautioned that the successful, ground-level implementation of the pact would heavily depend on execution across India’s various states and Union territories.

With bilateral merchandise trade reaching $136.54 billion and services trade at $83.10 billion in 2024-25, both India and the EU view the 2027 rollout as a crucial step towards a vastly expanded and integrated economic partnership.
