Indian Automakers Refute E20 Fuel Damage Claims, Citing Rigorous Testing

· · 3 min read

Major Indian automakers like Maruti Suzuki and Toyota have dismissed widespread public concerns about E20 ethanol-blended fuel causing vehicle damage. They cite rigorous ARAI testing and extensive service data, attributing issues to fuel contamination, not E20.

New Delhi, India – India's leading automotive manufacturers are pushing back against growing public and political backlash regarding the nationwide rollout of E20 petrol, a fuel blend containing 20% ethanol. Companies including Maruti Suzuki, Toyota Kirloskar, Hero MotoCorp, Bajaj Auto, Hyundai Motors, and TVS Motors gathered in New Delhi on July 4th to address allegations of E20 fuel damage to vehicles.

Since the full implementation of E20 across all Indian fuel pumps in 2026, concerns have mounted among consumers regarding potential issues such as decreased fuel efficiency, accelerated wear and tear of components like rubber seals, and ethanol-induced moisture corrosion. Social media has also seen a surge in viral videos making unsubstantiated claims, some even bizarrely blaming E20 for attracting insects to fuel tanks.

Industry Defends E20 Compatibility and Safety

Central to the automakers' defense is the rigorous certification process established by the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI). Industry representatives highlighted that ARAI is an independent body that conducts tests not only for India but also for other countries, ensuring material and emissions standards align with international benchmarks.

Vikram Gulati, Country Head and Executive Vice President of Toyota Kirloskar Motor, underscored the automotive industry's highly regulated nature, noting, “Ethanol is also used in Formula 1 racing cars,” to emphasize its high-performance viability. Toyota Kirloskar Motor specifically addressed a viral video claiming E20 damage to a Toyota Hycross, stating their detailed technical assessment revealed the issue was due to “fuel contamination,” not E20 usage. The company confirmed the vehicle's fuel system experienced no material damage and ran perfectly after standard cleaning protocols.

Extensive Data Counters Consumer Fears

Maruti Suzuki's Executive Director of Corporate Affairs, Rahul Bharti, stated that the auto industry conducts robust safety and quality checks. He added, “Data from 1.4 crore E20-run vehicles monitored through their service centers over the past 15 years showed zero evidence of ethanol-induced corrosion.” This data includes E10 compatible cars that were tested on E20 fuel without concerns.

Addressing grievances about a drop in fuel efficiency, industry representatives clarified that while some vehicle owners claim losses as high as 10% to 20%, the actual engineering deficit is far lower. Maruti Suzuki clarified that compared to E10, E20 typically results in a 3-3.5% loss of mileage due to ethanol’s lower energy density. The automaker also confirmed they are not currently offering any aftermarket E20 conversion kits.

Puneet Anand, Associate Vice President at Hyundai Motors, dismissed social media claims, stating, “we have not seen any glaring claims of E20 damage.” Vartika Shukla, former CMD of Engineers India Limited (EIL), categorically refuted claims of engines experiencing moisture residue due to E20, calling them untrue.

The automotive giants maintain that their vehicles are designed, tested, and certified for E20 fuel, urging consumers to differentiate between legitimate concerns and misinformation.
