Indian AC Makers Eye Europe Heatwave Boom, Exports Face 2027 Hurdles

· · 2 min read

India's air conditioner manufacturers are targeting Europe's growing demand for cooling, driven by frequent heatwaves. However, stringent certification and product adaptation requirements mean significant exports are not expected before 2027.

Europe's escalating heatwaves are creating a lucrative, albeit challenging, market for Indian air conditioner manufacturers. As temperatures on the continent rise at twice the global average, a stark warning from the World Health Organization (WHO) highlights the urgent need for cooling solutions.

Europe's Warming Climate Fuels AC Demand

The WHO has reported that Europe is the fastest-warming continent, with over 1,300 excess deaths recorded since June 21 due to extreme temperatures. This alarming trend has led to a dramatic surge in demand for cooling products, with sales and inquiries reportedly climbing two to three times in affected European regions.

Kamal Nandi, Head of the Appliances Business at Godrej Enterprises Group, noted that while the company had been exploring European opportunities, this year's heatwaves have significantly amplified their interest. This growing demand presents a clear opportunity for India's burgeoning manufacturing sector.

Government Backs Export Ambitions

The Indian government views air conditioner manufacturing as a high-potential industry, akin to its success in smartphone production. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw have encouraged manufacturers to boost exports. Furthermore, air conditioners are the only white-goods category included in India's production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme, underscoring the government's commitment to fostering export capacity.

Significant Hurdles Before 2027 Launch

Despite the enthusiasm, large-scale commercial exports from India to Europe are not anticipated to begin before 2027. Indian manufacturers face several formidable challenges:

  • Certification Requirements: Products must meet Europe's rigorous CE certification, energy-labelling, and eco-design regulations.
  • Product Redesign: European homes often require different designs, particularly heat-pump air conditioners that provide both cooling and heating, which constitute nearly 80% of residential AC sales there.
  • Installation Challenges: Many European buildings were not designed for conventional AC systems, and heritage rules in some cities restrict external split-AC units, leading to higher installation costs.
  • Market Competition: The European market is already dominated by established Chinese, South Korean, and Japanese brands, which often benefit from a 15-18% cost advantage over Indian producers.

Jasbir Singh, CEO of Amber Enterprises, emphasized the difficulty, stating, "First, we have to get the product ready for those countries and clear their energy-efficiency norms." While Indian companies like Godrej plan to launch by next summer, widespread commercial shipments are still a few years away as they navigate these complex requirements.
