The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in Maharashtra has taken stringent action against a prominent Burger King outlet in Pune's Camp area, ordering its sealing and the immediate suspension of its food license. The move comes after officials discovered significant hygiene deficiencies and violations of food safety regulations during an inspection.
Statewide 'Safe Food' Initiative
This action against the Pune Burger King, a long-standing establishment since 1992, is part of a comprehensive statewide campaign dubbed 'Safe Food, Safe Drug, Safe Maharashtra.' Initiated under the directives of Food Safety Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, the drive aims to ensure compliance with hygiene and safety standards across all food businesses in the state.
Inspection Findings and Broader Impact
During a special inspection drive conducted on August 13, FDA officials scrutinized 86 establishments throughout Maharashtra. These included various food businesses, quick-commerce delivery platforms such as Zepto, Blinkit, and Instamart, as well as traditional hotels and restaurants.
- One establishment was immediately ordered to cease operations.
- Sixty improvement notices were issued to businesses needing to rectify deficiencies.
- Fourteen food business licenses were suspended, with five each belonging to Blinkit and Zepto, two for Instamart, and one each for Bhagwati Store and Swinsta ENT Pvt Ltd.
- Disturbingly, during one store inspection, officials reported finding cockroaches nesting and moving on racks used for storing food packets.
Actions in Pune Division and Other Establishments
Between August 11 and August 14, inspections in the Pune division specifically led to the immediate suspension of licenses or registrations for 16 establishments due to severe hygiene and food safety violations. Besides the Camp Burger King, other businesses facing action included Fortune Enterprises (Hotel Sayaji) in Lonavala, Hotel Chul Mutton in Lohegaon, Simply South in Bhosari, and specific Domino's Pizza and Pizza Hut outlets in Karad.
The FDA also flagged facilities operated by Blinkit Commerce Private Limited in Ghatkopar and Zepto in Lokhandwala for non-compliance, noting issues like inadequate temperature control for perishable items, poor warehouse layouts, and improper segregation of food and non-food items.
Beyond Food Safety: Seizures and Arrests
The extensive FDA drive wasn't limited to hygiene. Officials also cracked down on violations related to milk and milk products, seizing 698 kg of such items valued at approximately Rs 34,302. Further seizures included 1,270 kg of various food items, including bakery products and edible oil, worth about Rs 1.29 lakh.
In a separate enforcement effort targeting banned products like pan masala and gutkha, the FDA registered 10 First Information Reports (FIRs), leading to the arrest of nine individuals. Banned stock worth Rs 46.76 lakh was confiscated, bringing the total value of all seized goods during the drive to over Rs 46.89 lakh.
The FDA has affirmed that these inspections will continue, with a clear warning that businesses failing to meet hygiene and food safety standards will face strict consequences, including improvement notices, license suspensions, and orders to cease operations.
