Hyundai Bayon SUV Launches at ₹9.99 Lakh in India; CNG Variant Coming January

· · 2 min read

Hyundai Motor India has launched its new Bayon midsize SUV, with prices starting from ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). A CNG variant is slated for release in January 2027, as the automaker aims to bolster its leadership in the competitive mid-SUV segment.

Hyundai Motor India Ltd. officially launched its new Bayon midsize SUV on Monday, October 26, 2026, with an attractive starting price of ₹9.99 lakh (ex-showroom). This strategic introduction aims to solidify Hyundai's dominance in India's rapidly expanding mid-size SUV market.

Upcoming CNG Variant and Powertrain Strategy

While the Bayon initially hits the market with a 115 PS petrol engine, a compressed natural gas (CNG) powered variant is confirmed for launch in January 2027. Notably, Hyundai has opted against offering a diesel powertrain for the Bayon. Tarun Garg, Managing Director and CEO of Hyundai Motor India, stated that providing too many powertrain options can confuse customers and that the company seeks to optimize its offerings. He clarified that diesel engines would remain integral to other models, such as the Creta.

Market Positioning and Sales Ambitions

The Bayon SUV is designed to complement, rather than replace, Hyundai’s highly successful Creta model. Hyundai anticipates combined sales of 2.5 lakh units for both the Creta and Bayon in calendar year 2027. The Bayon is specifically positioned as a technology-led product, targeting consumers who are early adopters of new features.

Advanced Technology and Features

True to its tech-forward branding, the new Bayon comes equipped with a generative AI-powered voice assistant, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS). These features underscore Hyundai's commitment to innovation and catering to modern consumer demands.

Expanding Market Share and Export Strategy

The launch of the Bayon marks a renewed product push for Hyundai in the Indian market, where the mid-size SUV segment currently accounts for 16.5% of the total passenger vehicle market and is experiencing rapid growth. Hyundai also plans to increase SUV penetration in its portfolio from approximately 70% to 80% by next year, partly driven by the Bayon and an upcoming compact electric SUV.

Manufactured in India for both domestic sales and exports, the Bayon is central to Hyundai's ambition to boost exports to 30% of its total sales over the next five years, up from 24.5% last year. However, logistical challenges and port congestion in the Middle East, a key export region accounting for 40-45% of Hyundai India's exports, have impacted shipments. The company is actively mitigating this by increasing exports to Central and South American markets, including Mexico.
