Shares of BSE Ltd. experienced a notable decline of 3.7% on September 9, 2026, dropping to a low of Rs 3,268.20 on the NSE. This downturn followed a new report from Bernstein, which initiated coverage on the Indian exchange with an 'Underperform' rating. Conversely, Multi Commodity Exchange of India (MCX) shares saw a 0.52% rise to Rs 3,358.50, marking their third consecutive day of gains, after receiving an 'Outperform' rating from the same brokerage.
Bernstein's Analysis: Diverging Futures for Exchanges
Bernstein's report highlighted a divergence in the growth prospects of the two major Indian exchanges. For BSE, the brokerage suggested that its period of rapid growth is likely behind it, anticipating a normalization as equity-derivatives volumes moderate and market-share gains peak. Analyst Manas Agrawal was quoted stating that the 'best is behind for BSE.'
The report projected impending earnings cuts for BSE, which are expected to pressure its valuations. Bernstein set a target price of Rs 2,820 for BSE, implying a potential downside of approximately 17% from its closing price on the previous Tuesday. The valuation was based on about 32 times estimated FY28 earnings per share.
MCX Sees 'Exceptional Growth Momentum'
In stark contrast, Bernstein expressed a highly positive outlook for MCX, citing 'exceptional growth momentum' in contracts traded. The brokerage believes that commodities are at an earlier stage of their participation and growth cycle, with equity derivatives offering a long runway for cross-pollination opportunities.
Bernstein's estimates for MCX's Q2FY27 volumes and FY27 earnings are about 10% ahead of the market consensus. They valued MCX at approximately 45 times estimated FY28 EPS, setting a price target of Rs 3,830. This target suggests an upside of around 15% from Tuesday's closing price.
Market Reaction and Investor Implications
The immediate market reaction saw BSE's stock fall, reflecting investor concerns over the 'Underperform' rating and the brokerage's cautious stance on its future growth. For MCX, the positive rating reinforced its upward trajectory, signaling confidence in its continued expansion.
Investors will be closely watching how these assessments by Bernstein, a prominent foreign brokerage, influence broader market sentiment and the performance of these key Indian stock exchanges in the coming quarters.
