With voting concluded on April 23 and 29, all eyes are now on West Bengal as the state prepares for the Assembly election results, scheduled to be announced on May 4, 2026. The high-stakes contest pits the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in a battle that will decide the state's political future.
Several constituencies have emerged as crucial battlegrounds, drawing intense scrutiny due to heavyweight candidates and fierce campaigning. These include Bhabanipur, Nandigram, Panihati, Domkal, Kharagpur Sadar, and Hingalganj.
Key Candidates and Their Constituencies
Mamata Banerjee (TMC)
The incumbent Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, is contesting from her long-standing stronghold of Bhabanipur. This constituency has been her political base since 2011. She faces a significant challenge from the BJP's Suvendu Adhikari, who famously defeated her in Nandigram in the 2021 elections. Banerjee is campaigning on her 'Ghorer Meye' (daughter of the house) image, while the BJP seeks a narrative of 'revenge-reversal'.
Suvendu Adhikari (BJP)
A prominent figure in West Bengal politics, Suvendu Adhikari joined the BJP in 2020 after leaving the TMC. He is a key opponent to Mamata Banerjee, having defeated her in Nandigram in 2021. This election, Adhikari is contesting from Nandigram against Pabitra Kar and also against Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur, setting up a direct confrontation in two critical seats.
Firhad Hakim (TMC)
Firhad Hakim, the current Mayor of Kolkata since 2018 and a Cabinet Minister holding portfolios such as urban development and minority affairs, is seeking re-election from the Kolkata Port assembly seat. He faces challenges from Rakesh Singh of the BJP and Faiyaz Khan of the CPI(M).
Dilip Ghosh (BJP)
Former BJP West Bengal president, Dilip Ghosh, is known for his role in expanding the party's influence in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. He is contesting from Kharagpur Sadar, where his opponents include Pradip Sarkar of the TMC and Madhusudan Roy of the CPI(M).
Ratna Debnath (BJP)
Making her political debut on a BJP ticket, Ratna Debnath is contesting from the Panihati assembly seat in North 24 Parganas. Her entry into politics is driven by a quest for justice for her daughter, who was a victim in the 2024 RG Kar Medical College case, and a commitment to improving women's safety. She is up against TMC's Tirthankar Ghosh and CPI(M)'s Kalatan Dasgupta.
Humayun Kabir (Aam Janata Unnayan Party)
Humayun Kabir, a former minister in Mamata Banerjee’s cabinet, has had a tumultuous political journey, switching parties multiple times. Expelled from the TMC in 2025, he has launched his own party, the Aam Janata Unnayan Party, and is contesting independently from Domkal.
As counting day approaches, political analysts and voters remain on edge, anticipating whether the TMC will successfully defend its stronghold or if the BJP will achieve a significant breakthrough in one of India's most fiercely contested state elections.
