Thousands of students in Jharkhand have intensified their protests against alleged JPSC paper leaks and widespread irregularities in state recruitment examinations. The agitation, which began in Ranchi on July 25, has escalated with students now demanding a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe and the resignation of Chief Minister Hemant Soren, who also holds the education portfolio.
Demands for CBI Probe and CM's Resignation
Protesting aspirants have voiced strong dissatisfaction with previous state-level investigations, specifically citing an earlier CID probe into the JSSC CGL exam that they claim yielded no satisfactory outcome. “We do not want a CID investigation; we want a CBI investigation,” one JPSC aspirant stated, highlighting the long years of preparation students dedicate to these competitive exams.
The students have directly challenged Chief Minister Soren, urging him to step down if his government cannot effectively address the ongoing crisis. Allegations of corruption are rampant, with one participant at the protest displaying a chart detailing alleged monetary rates for various government job positions, including Forest Range Officer, Lady Supervisor, and Madhyamik Acharya.
Political Pressure Mounts on Ruling Coalition
The protests have drawn significant attention from opposition parties. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its youth wing, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, have staged demonstrations across East Singhbhum, West Singhbhum, and Chatra districts, amplifying the pressure on the state's ruling coalition, which includes the Congress party.
BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari and former Chief Minister Raghubar Das have shared videos and statements supporting the students' cause, criticizing the state government for its handling of the situation. Some commentators have also questioned the silence of certain groups who previously demanded the Union Education Minister's resignation, now that similar issues have emerged in a Congress-allied state.
Arrests and Resignation Amidst Controversy
In connection with the alleged JPSC paper leak, reports indicate that 11 individuals have been arrested so far. The controversy also led to the resignation of JPSC Chairman Lalbiaktluanga Khiangte, underscoring the severity and impact of the allegations. Students are demanding comprehensive reforms within the JPSC and accountability from the state government for the recurring examination irregularities.
