Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL) has entered the burgeoning premium LPG market with the launch of Bharatgas Lite ZIP. This new service promises instant LPG connections and accelerated cylinder delivery, intensifying competition among oil companies to enhance cooking gas services.
Instant Connections and Innovative Cylinders
The core of Bharatgas Lite ZIP lies in its promise of convenience. Customers can now obtain an LPG connection swiftly, bypassing traditional waiting periods. A key feature of the service is BPCL's Bharatgas Lite composite cylinder. These 10kg cylinders are significantly lighter than conventional steel alternatives, are rust-proof, and boast a transparent body that allows users to easily monitor gas levels. Designed with enhanced safety features and a modern aesthetic, they cater specifically to the demands of urban consumers.
BPCL Chairman and Managing Director Sanjay Khanna inaugurated the service, which first rolled out in Mumbai. The company has ambitious plans to extend Bharatgas Lite ZIP to an additional 100 cities across 24 states by August 15, 2026.
Market Competition Heats Up
BPCL's launch follows similar innovations from competitors. Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL), for instance, recently partnered with Swiggy Instamart to offer on-demand LPG cylinder deliveries. This service, the first of its kind in India's LPG sector, debuted in Bengaluru. HPCL introduced its 10kg composite LPG cylinder, HP Navya, alongside its existing 5kg metal cylinder, allowing customers to order via the Instamart app even without an existing domestic LPG connection.
HPCL's initiative targets students, young professionals, and small families. New orders are treated as cylinder purchases with identity verification, while subsequent refills involve collecting the empty cylinder upon delivery of a new one. HP Navya also highlights features like lighter weight, rust resistance, and a transparent body for gas level checks, suitable for apartments and smaller households.
With Bharatgas Lite ZIP now in operation, all three major state-run oil marketing companies are actively developing premium LPG segments, whether through composite cylinders, faster delivery models, or pilot projects. This surge in competition is driven by a growing consumer demand for more convenient and efficient cooking gas services across India.
