· · 2 min read

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan is developing a ₹15 crore dharamshala in Ayodhya, honoring his father, poet Harivansh Rai Bachchan. The facility will feature over 20 rooms and is planned as part of The Sarayu project.

Bachchan's Vision for Ayodhya

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan is embarking on a significant philanthropic endeavor, planning to construct a dharamshala (pilgrim's inn) in Ayodhya. This ambitious project, estimated to cost approximately ₹15 crore, is dedicated to the memory of his renowned father, poet Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan. The proposed facility is designed to offer accommodation with more than 20 rooms for visitors to the sacred city.

Project Details and Approval Process

The dharamshala is slated to be built within The Sarayu project, located along Ayodhya's Dashrath Path. An application seeking approval for the building map has already been submitted to the Ayodhya Development Authority (ADA). The ADA has subsequently issued a public notice, inviting objections to the proposed layout from the public within a 15-day window. Following this period, and after completing the necessary procedural steps, the map is expected to receive formal approval, with construction anticipated to commence in October.

Ayodhya Development Authority Vice Chairman Anurag Jain confirmed the receipt of the application, stating, "prominent figures across the country are contributing to Ayodhya's development." He added that the layout will be approved after due process to enhance facilities for visiting devotees.

Honoring a Literary Legacy

The dharamshala serves as a tribute to Dr. Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a towering figure in Hindi literature. A recipient of the prestigious Padma Bhushan, he is widely celebrated for his iconic 1935 poem, Madhushala, and his notable translations of William Shakespeare's plays into Hindi. His legacy as a poet and scholar continues to inspire, and this dharamshala will further cement his memory in a city of cultural and spiritual significance.

Amitabh Bachchan's Ongoing Engagements

While overseeing this philanthropic venture, Amitabh Bachchan remains active in his professional life. He is currently hosting the 18th season of the popular television quiz show Kaun Banega Crorepati. His recent cinematic appearances include Rajinikanth's Tamil action film Vettaiyan (2024) and Nag Ashwin's dystopian sci-fi epic Kalki 2898 AD, alongside stars like Prabhas and Deepika Padukone.
