Global Chip Giants Boost India Footprint Ahead of SEMICON 2026

Semiconductor heavyweights Lam Research, Hirata, and Teradyne are expanding operations in India, investing billions and forming key partnerships. This surge supports India's transition from policy to large-scale chip manufacturing and ecosystem development before SEMICON India 2026.

India's ambitious drive to establish itself as a global semiconductor manufacturing hub is gaining significant momentum, with major international players deepening their commitments ahead of SEMICON India 2026. Global suppliers of chipmaking equipment, automation, and testing technologies are substantially increasing investments and expanding their footprint, signaling the next crucial phase in the country's semiconductor journey: building robust capabilities to support large-scale chip production.

Lam Research Commits Rs 10,000 Crore to Silicon Production

US-headquartered Lam Research, a leading supplier of semiconductor manufacturing equipment, is set to invest approximately Rs 10,000 crore over the coming years. This significant investment will establish its first silicon component manufacturing facility in India and expand its advanced research and development operations. The new facility will support a vertically integrated process, encompassing silicon ingot production and processing for advanced semiconductor technologies.

Lam Research is also actively engaging with local firms to source specialized materials, precision components, gases, chemicals, metrology, and manufacturing services critical to the semiconductor industry. The company already maintains a substantial engineering hub and advanced chip R&D laboratories within the country, underscoring its long-term commitment.

Hirata Corporation Partners for Semiconductor Equipment Distribution

Japanese automation and semiconductor equipment maker Hirata Corporation is formally entering India's semiconductor equipment market through a new partnership with ATS India. ATS India, which has collaborated with Hirata for over a decade in sectors like automotive, will now serve as Hirata's exclusive distribution partner for its standard semiconductor automation and material-handling portfolio.

This portfolio includes essential equipment such as equipment front-end modules (EFEMs), fan-out panel-level packaging (FOPLP) load ports, panel-level packaging (PLP) panel-handling robots, and high-performance wafer-handling robots. Hirata and ATS anticipate that this arrangement will provide Indian manufacturers with access to globally benchmarked equipment, accelerating the development of the country’s semiconductor manufacturing and outsourced semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) ecosystem. John Derzy, Vice President of Hirata Corporation of America, believes this collaboration could fundamentally transform how Indian manufacturers access advanced semiconductor equipment technology within two to three years.

Teradyne Establishes Semiconductor Testing Office in Bengaluru

The expanding ecosystem is also generating increased demand for downstream technologies, particularly those crucial for validating chips as manufacturing scales up. US-based Teradyne, a designer and manufacturer of automatic test equipment, has responded to this need by opening its first dedicated semiconductor testing office in Bengaluru, India. This move extends Teradyne's presence beyond its existing robotics operations in the region.

As India's fabrication and packaging capacity ramps up, the new office will bring advanced test technologies, application expertise, and training closer to the burgeoning ecosystem. This localized support is vital for building the sophisticated testing capabilities required to support high-volume semiconductor manufacturing in the country.
