This operation, it claims, has created a previously unused shipping corridor through Omani territorial waters, potentially offering a new route near the highly strategic Strait of Hormuz.
However, the claim remains unverified by any official sources, including the White House, the US military, or Omani authorities. The 'Morse Report' alleges the route is approximately 1,600 feet wide with a natural depth of around 93 feet, making it potentially navigable by Very Large Crude Carriers (VLCCs) after limited dredging.
The Strategic Importance of the Strait of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most critical maritime chokepoints, connecting the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea. At its narrowest, it is only about 29 nautical miles wide, with designated shipping channels for vessels entering and leaving the Gulf.
Its importance is immense: the International Energy Agency estimated that roughly a quarter of global seaborne oil trade, approximately 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products, transited the strait daily in 2025. This includes nearly 15 million barrels per day of crude oil. Additionally, almost all liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports from Qatar and the UAE, representing nearly 20% of global LNG trade, rely on Hormuz.
Recent regional tensions have highlighted how quickly shipping patterns can shift when the Strait of Hormuz becomes unreliable. While Iran maintains control over the waterway and the US insists it remains open, vessel traffic has declined, forcing shipping companies to weigh military and insurance risks.
Existing Alternatives and Their Limits
The ongoing disruptions have spurred greater use of existing alternative infrastructure. Saudi Arabia has increased exports via its East-West pipeline to Yanbu on the Red Sea, while the UAE utilizes its pipeline from Habshan to Fujairah, which bypasses Hormuz. However, these existing bypasses can only redirect an estimated 3.5 million to 5.5 million barrels per day of crude, significantly less than the volumes typically moving through Hormuz.
Analyzing the Alleged Omani Corridor
If the 'Morse Report' claim of an Omani shipping corridor were to be verified, it could provide an additional navigational option, which is crucial in times of heightened risk. The report suggests the geography of Jazirat Musandam and the Earth's curvature might shield vessels from direct Iranian observation. However, such claims about invisibility to observation should be treated cautiously, as radar, aircraft, drones, satellites, and electronic surveillance can still detect vessels.
Crucially, even if verified, this new passage would not constitute a complete bypass of the Strait of Hormuz. A 1,600-foot-wide passage would still be geographically within the broader Hormuz region. Its actual usefulness would depend on numerous factors, including its precise location, depth, any navigational restrictions, proximity to Iranian military assets, mine risks, insurance requirements, and crucially, the willingness of commercial shipping companies to use it.
The Red Sea: Another Critical Chokepoint
Adding another layer of complexity, the Red Sea and Bab el-Mandeb corridor, connecting the Indian Ocean with the Suez Canal, represent the shortest maritime route between Asia and Europe. This route traditionally handles about 12% of global trade and a significant share of container traffic.
The Iran conflict has also impacted this corridor, with Yemen's Houthi movement targeting shipping. This raises concerns that Bab el-Mandeb could become another major chokepoint. This is particularly problematic as Saudi Arabia increasingly relies on its Red Sea infrastructure as an alternative for crude that cannot move through Hormuz. If both chokepoints become simultaneously unsafe, the effectiveness of these workarounds would be severely diminished.
Global Implications of Chokepoint Disruptions
Should both the Strait of Hormuz and Bab el-Mandeb become effectively unusable, ships carrying Gulf crude to Asia, or those traveling between Asia and Europe, would face immense disruption. They would be forced to take the much longer route around Africa's Cape of Good Hope. This would translate to increased fuel consumption, longer voyages, higher demand for vessels, and significantly elevated insurance premiums. These higher freight costs would eventually impact the prices of manufactured goods, electronics, machinery, food, and other commodities globally.
Asian economies, particularly China and India, are at the epicenter of this risk, having accounted for 44% of crude exports passing through Hormuz in 2025. Japan and South Korea also heavily depend on Gulf energy flows. For India, a prolonged disruption could dramatically affect crude import costs, freight rates, refinery economics, and ultimately domestic fuel prices. The Suez route is also vital for India's trade with Europe, making the Red Sea situation equally critical.
