Mizoram Targets 1.2 Million Tourists by 2030 with Winter Tourism Push

· · 2 min read

Mizoram aims to attract 1.2 million tourists by 2030, fueled by ₹680 crore in investments since 2023. The state is developing new winter experiences, including festivals and adventure activities, to become India's 'Winter Capital'.

Mizoram Sets Ambitious Tourism Goals for 2030

Mizoram is charting an ambitious course to significantly boost its tourism sector, targeting 1.2 million (12 lakh) tourist arrivals by 2030. The state's strategy includes a substantial investment of approximately ₹680 crore in tourism infrastructure and experiences since 2023. This push aims to establish Mizoram as the "Winter Capital of India," capitalizing on its unique cultural and natural attractions.

Tourism Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, speaking at the Mizoram Travel Fest 2026 in Aizawl, highlighted the state's recent growth. Mizoram recorded a 51% increase in tourist arrivals, welcoming over 6.7 lakh visitors between January and August of the current year. The minister noted a remarkable 97% growth in tourist numbers between 2024 and 2025, attributing part of this surge to improved connectivity, particularly the inauguration of the Bairabi–Sairang rail line in September 2025.

Strategic Focus on Winter Tourism

Central to Mizoram's tourism expansion is a concerted effort to develop a robust winter tourism identity. This initiative will revolve around a flagship winter festival and a curated calendar of seasonal events. These include diverse offerings such as music and cultural programs, vibrant food and craft fairs, exquisite flower showcases, agro-tourism initiatives, and a range of sports and adventure activities.

Mizoram's rich Christmas traditions are also being leveraged as a distinctive draw for winter visitors. Community feasts, harmonious choirs, caroling, festive parades, and beautifully illuminated towns and churches offer a unique cultural experience. Upcoming events on the winter calendar include the Leitlangpui Music Festival from November 11 to 13, and the Winter Festival in Aizawl, scheduled from December 15 to 23. Other events like Tlaizawng Paradise (December 17-18), Sakawrhmuituai Sunset (December 31), and Chepa Nunchan (January 2) are also planned.

Significant Investments Underpin Growth

The state has mobilized considerable investment to support its tourism vision. Out of the ₹680 crore in tourism investment since 2023, 11 major projects account for an outlay of ₹608.38 crore. These key developments include:

  • A ₹250-crore project dedicated to iconic tourist facilities and attractions.
  • The ₹127-crore PM Ekta Mall.
  • A ₹99.71-crore conference centre located at Thingsulthliah.
  • A ₹34.50-crore aerial ropeway project connecting Thenzawl and Buangpui.

Minister Hmar emphasized a commitment to responsible and sustainable growth, welcoming both visitors and further investment in tourism enterprises. Beyond the 2030 target, Mizoram envisions reaching 2 million (20 lakh) tourist arrivals by 2047, alongside expanding accommodation capacity and developing ten Culture, Adventure, and Nature (CAN) tourism circuits connecting 40 destinations.
