PM Modi Highlights India's Democratic Roots and Digital Future at Bloomberg Forum
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing the prestigious Bloomberg New Economic Forum, emphatically stated that India is the "Mother of Democracy." He underscored the nation's deep-seated commitment to fostering diverse views and encouraging open debates, identifying these as fundamental pillars of Indian society. The forum, held in India for the first time, provided a global platform for discussions on the evolving economic landscape.
India: A Hub of Democratic Discourse
During his remarks, Prime Minister Modi elaborated on the vibrant democratic fabric of India, citing impressive statistics to illustrate its dynamic nature. He noted that the country is home to over 100 languages, nearly 80,000 registered newspapers and publications, more than 1,000 satellite television channels, and over 500 million active users on platforms like YouTube and Instagram. This vast digital and traditional media ecosystem, he argued, facilitates robust and open discussions on a multitude of issues.
The 'Power to Empower' Through Technology
Modi articulated a vision for 21st-century power, asserting that it now resides in technology, data, knowledge, and innovation. However, he posed a critical question: should this power serve only an elite few, or should it be harnessed to create opportunities for millions? He advocated for a paradigm shift towards what he termed "Power to Empower," emphasizing that these tools must be utilized to expand access, foster collaboration, and enhance the capabilities of all citizens.
"Today, technology is power, data is power, knowledge is power, innovation is power. But friends, the real question is not whose power it is, but how it is being used... From here, a new thought is born, and that thought is: Power to Empower," Prime Minister Modi stated.
The Prime Minister highlighted India's proactive efforts in making mobile data affordable and accessible, which has significantly enabled students from smaller cities to engage in digital learning. He reiterated that the ongoing challenge is to ensure that data, knowledge, and innovation actively broaden opportunities and enhance access for everyone, aligning with India's long-standing traditions of inclusivity and collaborative governance.
