Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani asserts that India is uniquely positioned to lead in scaling Artificial Intelligence (AI) by making it accessible and useful to millions. Speaking at the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, Nilekani countered widespread concerns about AI-driven job displacement, particularly within the IT services sector.
AI as a General Purpose Technology
Nilekani emphasized that AI is a "General Purpose Technology," far broader than any single model or company. He highlighted that no lone player can control the entire AI ecosystem, as increasing availability of chips and computing power empowers more innovators to develop and deploy AI solutions. "You cannot bottle this technology," he stated, underscoring its pervasive and distributed nature.
Dispelling Automation Fears in IT Services
His remarks come amidst global warnings, including from IMF chief Kristalina Georgieva, who described AI as a "slow-moving tsunami" potentially impacting a significant portion of worldwide jobs. However, Nilekani strongly rejects the notion that AI will inevitably replace traditional software development and lead to a decline in demand for IT services.
Instead, he predicts a surge in demand as companies undertake comprehensive business transformations to integrate AI. "Requirement for companies like Infosys is increasing. We are going to see more work coming our way," Nilekani affirmed, dismissing "disaster marketing" predictions.
Business Transformation Drives New Demand and Jobs
Nilekani clarified that business transformation extends far beyond just coding; technology constitutes only about 30 percent of a typical technology project. The remaining 70 percent involves crucial aspects like governance, guardrails, and deeply understanding client requirements. This shift, he argues, will create new job roles focused on strategic implementation and client engagement, rather than just routine development tasks.
Small Businesses: A New Engine for Job Creation
Looking ahead, Nilekani identifies India's vast small business economy as a significant engine for future job creation, especially if these businesses widely adopt AI and other digital tools. By leveraging technology, small enterprises can enhance efficiency, expand their customer reach, and foster growth, subsequently generating demand for more workers and specialized services. The real challenge, he concluded, lies in ensuring robust business growth alongside technology adoption to support both productivity and employment.
