Saudi Arabia has officially handed over the Omani co-pilot implicated in a dramatic mid-air assault on a flydubai flight captain to the United Arab Emirates. The incident, which occurred aboard flight FZ1073 traveling from Dubai to Tel Aviv, necessitated an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.
Investigation Underway in UAE
The United Arab Emirates has initiated its own comprehensive investigation into the events that transpired during the flight. Authorities are examining the precise sequence of the cockpit assault, the motive behind it, and whether the co-pilot attempted to gain control of the aircraft or crash it. Saudi Arabia's Interior Ministry confirmed its preliminary probe, conducted with UAE security teams, indicated the co-pilot assaulted the captain.
Flight FZ1073: A Harrowing Descent
The Boeing 737 MAX, carrying 174 passengers—including 170 Israeli nationals—experienced a rapid descent from 36,000 feet to approximately 16,000 feet during the struggle. According to reports, Captain Smit Machchhar opened the locked cockpit door, allowing passengers to rush in and subdue the attacker. Passenger Yaniv Hayoun later recounted being the first to enter the cockpit and assist in overpowering the co-pilot. Following the struggle, two other on-duty pilots successfully stabilized the aircraft and executed a safe landing at Tabuk in north-eastern Saudi Arabia.
Captain Machchhar's Recovery and Praise
Both pilots received medical attention in a hospital in Tabuk for injuries sustained during the incident. Captain Smit Machchhar, a veteran pilot who previously worked with SpiceJet, is reportedly in good health and recovering well. India's Ambassador to the UAE, Deepak Mittal, visited Captain Machchhar and his family, confirming his stable condition. Captain Machchhar has been widely praised for his actions, with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu extending his salute for the pilot's "extraordinary bravery."
Terrorism Allegations and International Reactions
The motivation behind the co-pilot's actions remains a central focus of the ongoing investigation. US President Donald Trump speculated on a potential link to Iran, stating, "I would say the answer, based on what I'm hearing, is yes, but we're working on it right now." He had earlier suggested the attack could be either "a terrorist or perhaps a whack job." Similarly, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz characterized the incident as an "attempted jihadist terror attack." The UAE has stated it is actively investigating whether the incident constitutes a terror plot.
