Russian President Vladimir Putin has lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi's persistent efforts to foster peace in the Ukraine conflict. Speaking recently, Putin highlighted that Modi consistently brings up the issue during their bilateral discussions, despite their strong personal rapport.

Modi's Consistent Diplomacy

According to Putin, Prime Minister Modi is among the global leaders who, despite "very good and even friendly relations," continually seeks an end to the conflict in Ukraine. Putin specifically praised Modi for his "very good ideas" aimed at achieving mutually acceptable solutions and bringing the war to a peaceful conclusion.

Putin acknowledged India's neutral stance on the conflict but emphasized Modi's clear interest in its resolution. He expressed gratitude for Modi's proposals, though he did not elaborate on their specifics, and thanked the Indian leader for his desire to pursue a resolution through dialogue and diplomacy as swiftly as possible.

India's Stance on the Conflict

Prime Minister Modi has consistently advocated for peace, reiterating India's principled and humanitarian approach to the Russia-Ukraine conflict. He has previously disclosed engaging with both President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to understand their perspectives.

India has maintained that its strong relationships with key stakeholders on both sides position it uniquely to strengthen efforts towards restoring an early and lasting peace in Ukraine, consistently encouraging dialogue and diplomacy as the path forward.

Recent Bilateral Discussions

The two leaders most recently met in September 2026, on the sidelines of the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi. During their discussions, they addressed a range of topics beyond the Ukraine conflict, including enhancing closer trade ties and the implementation of the Programme for Economic Cooperation 2030.

Further areas of cooperation discussed encompassed infrastructure, energy, technology, defence, and culture, underscoring the broad scope of their bilateral engagement.
